scope base holes in 'recoilers'...4 holes, 6 holes,,,8?
« on: April 02, 2010, 03:56:11 AM »
Got a 45/70 to scope. When I first read about the Contender in 45/70 [Layne Simpon's article in Handloader many years ago] any attempt at scoping it with less than a 6 hole scope base was said to result in the gun's slinging the scope off like a bee stung mule kicks off a loose shoe!
Are the 4 holes that come in a standard Contender barrel enough? How many of you have 2 extra holes drilled and tapped'd for a 6 hole Weaver style base or T'SOB SSK mount?
Thanks, don't want a scope impression on my forehead! ;D

Can't say about the the 45/70. But have had 44mag and 454 Barrels with the Weaver four hole mounts.  Never had a bit of trouble that I recall.

Send it to SSK for a 6 screw, 3 ring T'SOB. It needs it.

I had a Super 14 44mag barrel rechambered to 444 Marlin 20 years ago.
4 hole mount with a little epoxy under the mount and have had no problems.

Have two different 45-70 Contender barrels with 4-hole scope bases and neither has ever had a problem.  One of them goes way back into the early eighties.  Still....i would feel better with a six hole T'SOB type mount on either of them.  It is my theory that on hard kickers(ie 45-70), the size, weight and mounting height of the scope have as much to do with being able to hold it in place during recoil as the caliber.  My 45-70's have been scoped with small light 2X or 4X M8 Leupolds on Weaver type bases mounted as low as possible in aluminum rings(3-4 rings).  On the other hand, on my 309JDJ I want the use of a much larger, heavier vari-power scope and it has to be mounted higher.  I'm not sure I'd risk it without the 6-hole T'SOB and three rings.
