7mm-08 gets refinished today!!!
« on: April 02, 2010, 04:09:14 AM »
Well today is the day. I am home from work and school with foot surgery and I am really bored cause I can't even get out and shoot so...

My NIB 7mm-08 that has decent walnut stain over good grain wood will be sanded down and refinished. I am sealing with oil. I may pu some Minwax on it tomorrow if I want it darker, but probably won't need it. I am going to narrow down the pistol grip and fit it better to the frame. I am also going to float the barrel.

I will post before and after pictures after I finish.

I've done 4 of mine so far, the first 2 both tracker II's a 20 & 12ga I did 3 coats of boiled linseed oil and 3 coats of polyurathane. on my 44mag and 30-30 I did 1 coat of BLO then 3 coats of minwax natural and the 3 coats of poly. I like both ways equally. I love finding that hidden grain under the factory stain, and making each rifle individual. I'm debating on doing my 45-70 manlicher.

Well I sanded the fore end down and it is beatifully grained white wood. Real light color. I ran out of coarse sandpaper while trying to get the thick stain of the buttstock. I am going to pick some up today and finish it. I am going to do probably 8 coats of BLO mixed with mineral spirits and see how it drys. I may put a medium colored Minwax stain over it if it is real light. Debating parkerizing the barrel, but I don't have the set up so it will have to go to the smith and it is almost coyote time so it probably won't happen. After turkey season goes out this is going to be my <250 yard yote gun.

Be careful with the BLO and mineral spirits, There was another post (don't remember who it was) that left the rags and the mixed BLO sitting under their shop lights and it spontaneously combusted

Black Rustoleum works pretty well for barrel/action 'quick jobs' and is so user friendly. Just keep it out of the underlug/latch area.
Use 'odorless' mineral spirits, it still smells some, but so much better than the old stuff.

Daman,

Gcrank1 is right about the rustoleum black (matte), I just put a pistol grip on my old Mossberg 500 and painted it all black except for the moving stuff.  Turn out decent and took very little prep work.  Wife is taking this gun to a home defense shotgun class next weekend so will  have a report on how the rusteolum performs when the barrel heats up.  They are shooting over 350 rounds in one afternoon.

Back in 'the day' when using stuff like that was more common, so was the knowledge about flaming up, but even then accidents happened.
Your experience helps all of us remember!
At least it wasnt as bad as a biker friend who was rebuilding his chopper in the basement of his new house. He had all the greasy parts in a drain pan and poured in gasoline to scrub. Somewhere along the line he lit up a cig. He had a good start on burning a hole through the floor above before getting it out.
No urban legend this, true stuff!

A friend of mine is a taxidermist in Kentucky (first name is Mike, shop is in Louisville).  He was using a flammable solvent to defat a hide.  Apparently he was using a little too much solvent and without proper ventilation.  Feeling light headed he went outside for some fresh air.  Good thing he did because his furnace kicked on and blew all the windows out of his shop!.  Also burnt all the feather and fur off most of the mounts including a couple of full mount African trophies.  Good thing he had insurance.

He is still in the business today but I dont' think he uses or recommends that particular solvent anymore.

I am going to do probably 8 coats of BLO mixed with mineral spirits and see how it drys.

I've refinished more rifle stocks than I can count, plus a few ML's from scratch.
Why do you wanna mix BLO and mineral spirits?

There are sooo" many special and secret recipies out there for a gun finish,,at least ya didn't say polyurathane  :D
The last few years I've swung towards Tung oil,,something about a wood finish that's been proven for 3000 years.

I like that 50/50ish mix as a 'pre-treatment' while Im working wood, it soaks in well and enhances the natural grain, just dont use it if you plan on staining as it fills the pores and the stain wont take. I can slowly (gee, at this point it seems everything is slowly) work the wood to where I am satisfied and at each step rubb in some and it matches right up. BTW, Ive added Tung oil, etc to the original mix and with some evaporation of the MS it is probably 1/3MS to oils now. I have a lifetime supply from the 2gal. I made 20yrs. ago.
If you use linseed oil make sure it says 'boiled' on the label.
But all in all I could be satisfied with Birchwood Casey's True Oil.

I have Tung oil in my box of refinishing stuff, but I prefer the BLO thinned down with mineral spirits for the way it seals the wood and the finish it gives. Not knocking the tung oil, just prefer other.

If I decide to stain I will sand back to the wood. That probably won't happen, but thanks for the advice.

Well I shaved the buttstock down with a wood rasp where it meets the frame. It will be flush after sanding for fit. Haven't had as much time as I wanted to work on it, but it is coming along.

Well I have went another direction with this one. Thanks to Bencattin I am now putting the Camo lam t-hole stock set on it. I ordered the fore end this morning. I hope for it to all be here first of next week Bought 2 boxes of shells to try it out with. I am going to polish the bore this week end. The refinished set will be put back in case I run across a receiver that just screams buy me!

Well I had no intention of that project yesterday when I left to go to school in shorts t-shirt and flip flops. Well I volunteered to put the planters back together for my wife's granddad. I didn't get all the details before I went over there. I though cut and dry bolt everything back together. 30 minute project turned into a half night project and I still ain't finished!
