38 Super to 10mm
« on: April 02, 2010, 03:15:53 PM »
I've got a hard itch for a 10mm, and have a Kimber Team Match in 38 super that is my favorite 1911.

I've considered trying a Bar Sto drop in barrel in 10mm, mags, and springs.
Considering the rim diameter of the Super is .406 and the 10mm is .424 would I be able to get away with an extractor swap or would I need a different slide?

Thanks in advance.

I have never heard of anyone making this conversion, but see if you can fit a 10MM or 40 S&W in the breach cut of your slide.  I doubt if you can, but if you can, you should be able to make it work.

Pinkerton:  No, fraid not.  I think you will need a new upper - slide and barrel combo that is.  I had a older 38 Special match gun that was converted from 38 Super and had thought the same, to convert it to 10mm but it wouldn't.

Two different snakes and the skins are not interchangable.

Thanks everyone for the replys, it was an iffy proposition at best. I've been considering a 10mm for some time but was told it'll be about a 6 month wait for a Kimber target, then got this idea in my head.

Thanks again.

Your idea was/is not without merit.  I have been looking for a 38 Super slide for a Springer GI 1911 I have - a friend's Series 70 Colt 38 Super slide fit right on the frame and now that I need my own upper I be lookin', and found them at Caspian Arms.  Now for the next project.......

I do not recall if Caspian produces 40 caliber slides, I didn't look that closely at the website once I found the 38 Super slides but if they do then you may have found your answer, especially if the bolt face on the 40 is the same as it would be for the 10mm - don't know about the ejection port, although they may all be the same size.  Just a thought.
