My stable is all 'Japanese' at the moment  ::)  2 Toyota's, a Subaru, and a Nissan.  But like my Handi's they were all built in the USA  ;D.
My prior P/U ('04) was a GMC and it was 'ok,' other than the annual recalls.

CW,

Do you have rifle racks in your Jeeps?

BB

I had a set in the MJ when I purchased it back in '05. I swapped in a slider rear window and took it out. So currently no I don't, not in one of them!!  ;D

Gotta have a personal transportation module living in the country, and probably would have one even if in town so I could escape. Ive ended up with GM for quite a few years now through no plan or brand loyalty.
None truely 'new', a lot have been 'program vehicles' so most/all the depreciation is eaten by somebody else.
Ive used a 10 cents per mile (long outdated as cost of ownership) to calc how many miles I need to get out of it to have it 'pay for itself' or how much trade in I need to get. It has worked well for me.
Just like most things, dont pay more than its worth and take care of it like you will keep it forever (you just might).

gcrank, I have done a ton of research on cost of ownership and it goes like this: While your vehicle is in warranty (3yrs/36k miles) you pay about 50c per mile for "zero cost of repairs". When you are out of warranty, in today's $ it will cost you 10c/mile or less in repairs for the rest of the vehicle's life. That's right, the rest of its life, no matter how long you own it or how many miles you put on it. This data comes from a study by a service manager of a big dealership who always hated telling customers with high mileage cars they need the repairs rather than buy a new car. He analyzed the data and discovered this 10c/mile formula.

The best advice is, there is no need to sell your vehicle unless you don't like it anymore...the cost of repairs will always be a lot less than a car payment over time. Like I had a transmission job at 250,000 miles for $1500, but I had not had car payments for 5 years! And if I would have changed my transmission filter and fluid every 50,000 miles, my original transmission would still be in the vehicle.

Thanx for substantiating 'my formula', I worked it out from about 15yrs of my cars and experience.
I dont factor in tires, oil & filter or insurance because I have to do that with anything, just out of 'ordinary' repairs.
BTW, an easy trans flush:
Warm it up (drive somewhere and get home)
Pop off one trans cooler line to the radiator and stick a rubber hose on whichever spout is going to pump fluid out, drop it to the drain pan.
Start it up, leave in park and let it idle until it mostly stops removing fluid
Button up and refill
Yeah, it wont get it all, and you didnt change the filter, but it got a lot out to let you put new in. If you do this every 30K you may be surprised how long that tranny goes.

I bought a 65 GTO back in 72 for $1200. Still drive her a couple of times a month. Then in 83 I bought an 81 C10 Chevy which was my everyday transportation till 04 when I bought a new GMC Sierra Z71. Still have the Chevy. In 91 I bought a 78 Ford pickup from a friend's mother after her husband died. The 13 year old truck had 42,000 mi. and now has 109,000.

2005 Jeep Liberty

Its funny how you notice what kind of folks are driving your car.
I only saw very old ladies driving models similar to my previous cars; Buicks and a jag.
The Liberty seems to be a favorite of high school girls.
Except for having had dead deer laid across it, I guess I drive a Barbie Jeep.

As with Handis, you think you have them figured out, and somone comes up with a new way to do something. After 20 plus years of Automotive work in multiple levels of job descriptions, even up to Corporate level stuff, I am always amazed! Great diversity out there guys! Shows how we all have different backgounds and zip codes, but we are all independent thinkers, and all Americans!

I normally drive Ford trucks, but I learned last week that I can "break-down" my Handis and they'll stow in the saddlebag of my Honda Goldwing.  I fit three of them in the bag with no problems at all.

That means I can stow rifles in one bag, ammo in the other, and go to the range on my motorcycle.

I have had no brand loyalty over the years.   In the past, I did not buy anything new.   I usually read the reports on which brand/models are reliable and then try to pick one that is known for longevity.   I have owned exactly six vehicles.

58 Rambler Station Wagon 300K miles before selling.
65 Ford Fairlane coupe 297K before totalled on a rainy road.
66 Mercury Comet coupe 325K before selling to a restorer.
86 Isuzu Trooper II 210k miles before engine finally quit
96 Saturn SL2  198k before selling for my first "new" vehicle.
04 Nissan Titan 137K and still going strong

I drive a Land Rover, but I've driven Fords and Chevys, too.  I also have a '65 Porsche that I'm working on (without much success lately) and a 1980 MGB for a toy.  My wife drives a baby Benz, and my daughter a Mazda.  My guns include Winchester, Browning, Ruger, Tikka, Walther, Armi-Sport, etc.  I don't think I'm too tied down to brand names, lol.

Most of my guns are American made, a couple of Stouger Skeet guns, and a .22 single action revolver.  Everything else is American.

As for vehicles, it's what serves the purpose best.  I current;y have:

Ford F-350 Super Crew, Twin Turbo, Dully Diesel 4X4, love it, except the mileage is poor.  I have this thing for heavy towing.

Chevy S-10 4X4 ZR-2, Nice looking truck, hate it will never own another GM product.  Sky's daily driver during the winter.  Poor Dealership service, and constantly something wrong with it.  Dealership flat refuses to make some repairs, tells me to take it to another garage.  Vehicle is out of warranty.

Kia Sportage 4X4, Good little car, seldom has issues, dealership service was great during the warranty period, no issues since.  This little rig fits the wife perfectly since she is small herself, yet is arthritic friendly for tall guys like me.  (Meaning I don't have to fold myself up to get through the door).  Goes places that would surprise most folks.  Wife's daily driver during the winter.

Suzuki Samurai 4X4,  5 1/2" lift, with 31X10.5X15 tires.  My daily driver winter and summer.  I do all maintenance and service myself.  I did the lift, rebuilt the engine, transmission, transfer case, myself.

Mazda RX-8,  Wife's summer car.  Dealership service is great.  Too much power for snow, and rear wheel drive, so it is parked during the winter.  She lets me take it out sometimes, during the summer.  Talk about a screamer when you get it on a mountain road that's it's element.  Love driving it.

Mitsubishi Eclipse GT,  Bought this car for myself.  Wife gave it to Skyler while I was on vacation.  (Guess I ticked her off).  No dealership in town, but car has had no issues since we bought it.  This is a high performance vehicle, and you know it as soon as you let out the clutch.  Sky or I drive it during the winter after the roads are plowed.  It's no good in deep snow, or on ice, too much power.

Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"

I do have a Stoeger Condor O/U, a good gun so far; have a Spanish .50 cal muzzleloader and an Italian pistol.  The rest of the guns have American names: Browning, H&R, Marlin, Winchester, and Stevens.

My vehicles all have American brand names but not all "made in the USA'

1999 Chevrolet Suburaban made in Mexico
1995 Chevrolet C1500 "assembled in USA" (daughter drives)
1991 GMC Sonoma 4X4 "assembled in USA"
2007 Pontiac Vibe (Toyota Matrix) son's car
1981 Harley Davidson FLH

Chevy/GMC have always give me my money's worth, the only new vehicles ever bought were a 1981 Harley Sportser and the 1981 Electra Glide which was bought new in March 1982.  Had a Nissian, it did good as a hoopty.

'95 Jeep Cherokee for me.  Just put a lift kit on it last week.  Easy to work on.  Bought used.  Has a few homemade parts made from plumbing supplies from Ace Hardware.  ;D
Wife drives a 2001 Nissan Sentra.(Made in the USA)

I have no brand loyalty.  Research the hell out of my vehicles before buying them...and usually buy used from private owners.
