need to identify tracks and hole
« on: April 03, 2010, 03:22:09 PM »
ok the first picture is of what i believe to be a muskrat track(sorry for the bad pic, had to take it with my cell phone) the second picture is of the hole i found about 6 feet from the hole. the wierd thing is that i found what look like mouse or squirrel tracks in and outside the hole. theyre little about 1-2cm, they have 5 fingers.i couldnt get a picture as the light was failing and the flash was too strong. they almost look like baby mink or muskrat tracks. is this their breeding season or is it common for them to have babies at this time? the hole itself is about 6 inches high by 3-4in wide. any help or advice would be great.

ok i did some more scouting in the creek and i found another hole and a lot more tracks. the big tracks are what i believe  mink. they do have 5 fingers its just hard to see in the crappy pictures i took. the smallest i think may be baby mink but im not sure. they have 5 fingers also. i sure wish i had known about this before the season ended but theres always next season

That's what I thought too but I've never known them to dig holes especially a foot off the waters edge. The hole is dug right into the riverbank. Either way I'm bringing my 22 when I go out next, maybe I'll be havin squirrel for dinner one night

I think I found the culpret. I did more scouting and this little thing of what I believe to be a baby muskrat jumped off the bank and into the water and swam around for a second then went underwater. It was like 3-4in long and it was brownish with a darker stripe down it's back. I thought it was a frog unfortunatly I had my backpack on and a loaded 380 (for personal protection from yuppies) or I would have dove in after it. I found another hole too
