45/410 CONTENDER
« on: November 16, 2003, 09:15:30 AM »
MY BUDDY HAS A 45/410 BARRELL FOR HIS CONTENDER BUT OF COURSE LIKE ALL OF THEM THE 45 DOESN'T SHOOT ACCURATLEY. WHY COULDN'T YOU LOAD 410 CASES WITH 45 BULLETS TO PUT THE BULLET UP TO THE LANDS SO THAT THERE WOULDN'T BE THAT LONG JUMP THAT MAKES THEM INACCURATE? IF THE 410 CASES WOULDN'T WORK WHAT ABOUT LONG BRASS CASES LIKE FROM BALLARD? MAYBE OLD BLACK POWDER CASES SUCH AS THE 45/110. EVEN IF YOU HAD TO DOWN LOAD YOU WOULD HAVE AN ACCURATE BARRELL TO USE FOR HUNTING. COMMENTS APPRECIATED IF ANYONE WOULD THINK THIS WOULD WORK. THANKS

The  idea is great, but there is one minor problem: The 45 basic case is MUCH bigger than the 45 Colt, in fact about all they have in common is the "45" in the name.  The rim diameter on the 45/70 is .608" while the 45 Colt is .512".  I think your theory might hold water if you could find brass long enough.I'm not so sure about the use of the .410 hulls.  The walls on the hull would be so thick that you'd have to use a 44 or smaller bullet to make them chamber.  Then Youd have a bullet so small they'd bounce down the bore and you're accuracy would really go to pot!!!

I have found that good jacketed bullets work well in mine, but the hardcast I tried was way out in left feild.

Might use 454 brass and seat a bullet out as far as possable. Not perfect but might get you a little closer.

Although form many of the posts I've read it seams that this is a common complant of the 45 colts being inacurate in these barrels.  That is why I don't belive I will ever part with mine.  I must have got lucky because it is very accurate even with bulk ammo.

I have a 10 inch 45/410 with the normal iron sights. it shoots 255 gr cast (and loaded as cast) slugs to about 3 inches at 100 yards, this is not grreat but good enough forbig game  hunting in a pinch. I have tried all the things you talked about. the 45 cal bullets are to big for the 410 hulls, I even made 303 british brass  stright and loaded them with the 45 cal bullets All I would get is split cases and the few I did get to load got stuck under the extractor.
