Of all the Stupid things to do!
« on: April 04, 2010, 05:03:56 PM »
Blasted Beavers flooded another 15 or so feet around a private lake I fish.
I decided to remove part of the "New" dam they had created, not going to say how I did it.
Anyhow, I made about a 4 foot wide hole in the center of the dam and eureka flooding problem solved!
A wall of water gushed forth and the shallow spill way ditch was flowing like a mini Niagra falls!
Then it hit me....My truck is on the other side of the spill way! Crap!

Many years ago, while working for a civil engineer, we had to do topo on a large tract of land that was partly flooded by beavers.  3 dams within about an eighth of a mile, each fairly large.  We asked for help in the matter and the folks gave us an entire CASE of dynamite.  I had never seen that much at once.  We wired it all in the three, strung out all the wire we had over a couple rises, and touched it off.  I expect at the next moon landing they will find beaver.  To do the job in a hurry, I recommend large quantities of explosive.......... :D

Keep an eye on that dam. If you didn't get the beavers they'll have it rebuilt in a couple days.

Truck was on the opposite side of the spillway from me, not on the opposite side of the dam from the water... Thank the Lord! ... I didn't get the beavers with my assault on the dam but a bit of "Sniping"
this evening removed one of them. Shot was over 100 yards and a .22 mag really is not powerful enough
at that range but the 20x scope allows me to be quite precise on bullet placement.

Don't matter what you shoot them with, unless you hit the spine of the brain, if they are in the water they will dive and disappear.  If they are in a pond, or small lake, they will float in two hours.  A fishing rod with a bass plug makes for easy retrieval.  My favorites have been .22 Shorts, and my .17HMR.  Average shots are 20 to 60 yards.

Seldom get a shot of one on land, but same thing .22 short to the head or .17HMR to the body works good.

Check back there should be more.  They usually work in pairs, or a family group.  If they deepened a small pond it usually means they want to build more lodges for additional beaver in the area.  Mom and Pop are kicking the kids out, and they need to build their own lodge.

Danny-L:  22-250 works nice to kill them, but is very destructive on the pelts.  Especially on smaller Beaver, at close range, where you will get a pass through and blow a chunk out of an otherwise valuable pelt.

That is why a .22 short works so well.  Small hole in and no hole out.

You got to remember, Beaver are nothing but overgrown rats.  They are stupid.  When you see them splash and dive, just go and sit down nearby.  Soon they will surface and start swimming right out in front of you if you are still, and a little hidden.  As they swim by with only their heads out of the water makes for a perfect shot.  Or they will climb out onto shore and give you a good chance to make a stalk and a head shot as they chew on a tree.  Body shots, heart lung area, are to be avoided if possible.  Reason is they will head for the water fast, and if it is flowing water, and they reach it, you will never see them again.  That is one time I like the .17HMR, a body shot and I can usually reach them before they make it to the water.  It slows them down more than anything else I have used, without going all the way through.

I'm always laughing at my partner.  He uses a .22 Mag.  Good with head shots, but body shots and they head for the river.  Got to say that old man is fast on his feet.  He heads them off and thumps them in the head with an Ax.  Then complains about the two holes in the pelt, and the tear in the head area from the ax.  Still insist on carrying that .22 Mag, but has been caught using my .17 HMR as of late.

the location of this lake does not really allow for anything much bigger than a .22 mag.
I took 2 in the fall with a .22 lr and Aguila SSS rounds to the head. They both rolled over and sank
only to show up a couple of days later swelled up like beach balls floating on the lake. I
may try my .17 HMR next time.

ss:  They always find them floating after two hours.  That is the time it takes for the gases to build up in their stomach and intestines.  If you can catch them then they are no so smelly to work with.

Try the .17, head shot or body shot and they are done.  Trick is to break the spinal cord, base of the skull.  that way they just lie there floating.

Back when I was a young feller, I did some trapping. The first beaver I caught was huge! But the thing that amazed me was the fleas! He was on a drowning set. I got him out and up to the truck and dropped him on the ground. Shortly after the ground turned black with fleas. Never seen so many of them in my life!
Living in the water like they do I didn't think they would have fleas.

Here in Alaska they don't have fleas, but they do have scabies.  When i kill one I put a cord around it's neck and drag it to the truck.  I swing it into the truck without touching it.  Then I leave it till the next day before skinning.  That way all the scabies are dead before I touch it.
