Range day with the New Optima
« on: April 05, 2010, 04:01:47 PM »
Took the new CVA Optima out to 100 yards yesterday with 70gr BH209, CCI 209M primers and the 270gr Powerbelt Platinums. Sweet group. This load is super light recoil and easy enough for my 14 year old nephew to shoot. He'll be hunting this year for the first time ever. He originally wanted to use the new muzzleloader but then i got a CVA Apex 30-06 and after he shot 6 rounds, he was wide eyed and going, Im going to use this instead!!  :D
I changed out scopes to a Bushnell Sportsman 3-9x32. I put the black scope on my Apex.

American Pioneer 2F from Today,

But heres the other new baby. The muzzleloader barrel is on back order though  :'( I also have to get some new rings. I just through a set of cheapies on to try it out.

Bigblock, how was the handling and trigger?  Want to get my hands around one soon and if it feels good, I'll get one in a couple of months.  Good to know they shoot well!  My Apex dream is currently out the window with this depression!  Just got back to work again and after some catching up, this rifle is high on my priority list.  I love the new look!

Handling feels natural, Trigger is right about 3lbs with zero grit or creep.  And the breech plug works just as stated, 20-30 shots down the range and it comes right out.

Some shooting from today,
I made a better rifle rest today and boy did it turn out to be a good one! Just a pillow case filled 1/4 of the way with sand i shoveled into it.

All shots are from 100 yards.
80gr bh209 - 338gr Powerbelt Platinums.

Took 2 more shots with the same load. I think barrel heat was causing my shots to move to the left and up. It was 70* out today.

245gr Powerbelt Aerotip - 80gr BH209.

245gr Powerbelt Aerotip - 90gr BH209 My hunting load! The shot to the far left was my first shot on a cool barrel. Grrrrrr! I screwed up and typed 100gr on the target. Sorry guys! But that was 90gr bh209, Not 100.

295gr Powerbelt Aerotip - 100gr BH209. Again, far left shot #1 on cool barrel,
