epoxying scope bases on a barrel
« on: April 05, 2010, 04:48:16 PM »
I know some members here have used epoxy to hold a scope base on a barrel such as a shotgun barrel. What kind of luck did you have with it, and which epoxy works best? JB Weld? I would like to install one on a 20ga. barrel. I think there is plenty enough wall thickness to drill and tap it without drilling into the chamber, and I do have the equipment availability, but just weighing the options. Any input appreciated.

Nevermind the epoxy. Drill and tap it.
If you don't want to drill it you can silver solder it. (get a steel base)
The drill and tap is easy on a 20 ga.

I thought so too. Looks like plenty enough wall thickness without going thru into the chamber. Think I will.

Just wondering what sight set your planning on using. I have been thinking about trying this mod myself.

I installed a standard scope rail with a red-dot scope for my 10 year-old to turkey hunt with. Left a little material between the bottom of the drilled hole and the chamber. You will need two taps, one standard, and one that you grind the starting threads down to the first full thread, making a "bottoming" tap, otherwise you won't have enough threads for the screws. Worked great. Now I'm going to ream and thread it for a screw in choke.(I may not let her hunt with it after I'm done ;D ;D)

You sound like a real gunsmith buddy, all the best to you. Drilling and tapping holes for a scope rail or sights are one thing, but tapping for screw in chokes, wow!, I applaud your abilities, congratulations. Let us know how it comes out. You will have one fine barrel there that will handle Turkey, deer, hogs, and just about anythimng it needs to with the proper ammo....<><....:)

If I could only have one gun left and never have a chance to replace the others, I would keep a 20 gauge. Anything around Alabama can die to one!

Me too. ;D
My 20ga. Tracker (smoothbore) is the one I'd keep.

JB weld held for about 10 or so shots on my 12 gauge, then I bounced the scope off my forehead
