New to me 35 Rem barrel
« on: April 05, 2010, 04:58:43 PM »
Dropped the M.O. in the mail after work tonight, lookin forward to getting the barrel to try on the contender.  I have 2 Marlins in 35 Rem and really like em, wondering what the the light little contender is gonna have for a little "back-up" energy ::).  I was wanting a 38-55 or 375 barrel, but this will do for now.  DP

Barrel arrived today, many thanks to "theduke".  Will have to take her out this weekend to try.  Anyone who has one of these, would be interested in hearing how yours shoots and how the recoil compares to other guns since it's such a light little bugger.  DP

I don't have a 35 Rem in a carbine barrel but do have a Marlin 336 chambered that way. I stumbled across a plinking load using 180 gr. cast and 12.5 Herco that is very accurate. You might try something like that in your carbine for a mild, fun to shoot load. I expect the same can be done with other fast powders and cast bullets. I bought 8lbs of Herco at an auction and have been happily trying to use it up. You can see that slight changes made a fair difference in my rifle. BTW, the 12.5gr load has proven to be very consistant in accuracy over the last couple years. I probably shoot 10 times as many of these mild loads as I do full power cast loads. Alot less powder, noise, recoil. Paper and cans don't require much to do the job. Is you barrel a 21" tapered carbine?

Man I like my 35 Remy, its an old marlin but its a shooter and my go to brush rifle! Good luck with the contender barrel!  Post some pics and a range report so we can envy!

I took it out to my cabin last weekend and ran 54 rounds through it.  20 LE and 34 Remmy 200's.  It seems to like both of them just fine. :)  The LE's have a bit more recoil for sure, glad I put a slip-on Limbsaver pad on it. :D  At 100 yd it would put 2 at about an inch or less with both loads.  Took some shots at 208 yd and was suprised how much the Rems dropped when zeroed at 100, they were down more than 8-9 inchs.  3 shots was still less than 2 in. at that range. :-*  I was out of LE's by then, will have to take more up and try them at the longer range.  This was just a "get aquainted" trip, went through more than 300 rounds of ammo Sat.  Woke up Sunday still grinnin'.  The 223 barrel shoots as good or better, gonna keep an eye out for a 7-30 Waters barrel for it, then it will be ready for most things around there.  Not even interested in a 45-70 barrel for the Contender, not enough weight for that round.  My NEF is light enough. :o  DP

I have one in a 12" pistol bbl. It prefers the 200 gr Hornady round nose to anything else I've tried yet, including the 180 and 200 gr Rem's. I recently picked up a box of the discontinued 180 gr Hornady ssp's to try in it. My luck is it will love them, since you can't get them anymore. Mine prefers Win 748 powder with that 200 Hornady.

Sorry, I forgot to post about the barrel length.  Yes, it is a 21" factory, both are, and would like to find a 7-30 Waters the same.  Very light weight and tote-able, really like the little carbine.  The trigger is very light and breaks so clean.  That was the reason I bought it off the used rack, the sweet trigger.  DP

I have had one for years, and couldn't see any difference in performance between it & my Marlin. Sure was a difference in carrying, ESPECIALLY on steep, snowy mountain sides or thick brush.

I did have a problem with some lots of ammo refusing to lock up & fire. It seems I had a minimum length chamber, and if the batch of ammo was at max it was a no-go. Once I started handloading fo it, the problem went away.
