Are Crossbows ok to talk about here?
« on: November 16, 2003, 06:36:53 PM »
Just got my second deer this year with a crossbow. I hunted with a recurve and then compound for years but now due to a disability I can hunt with a crossbow so decided to give it a try, Both deer shot with it were not huge but I was hunting in a metro area that have bonus permits to kill off a over populated deer herd in the metro area so I did not feel too bad harvesting these smaller deer. The crossbow I have is a Barnett Ranger or so the box says but it looks more to me like a RX150. The only difference is one is a recurve and one is a straight prod. Mine is a straight  prod 150 # pull shoots 16 inch bolts. Works well, for a cheaper crossbow I ma impressed. It came with a cheesy red dot sight and it may be cheap but it works well and handles the thump of the crossbow with out getting out of wack. Jim

Oh hell yes. I use a Horton Dakota SL until my PSE arrives and I get enough practice to be comfortable with it.
Good luck, this forum is very slow. Most of the guys who use it are hunting.

CWG, Yea that is understandable I have been hunting also. Good luck hunting to you. Like I said got 2 deer so far and still have a archery tag to fill. Have lots of time to do that though to the end of Jan for this metro area and the rest of the areas the end of Dec. Jim

No problem with crossbows here.  Just "horizontal archery".  No bashing us "up and downers", though... :D

Would not think of it bashing that is!  I still own my Martin compound would not get rid of it. It has killed a lot of deer for me. :)  Makes me mad A few years ago I saw lots of recurves at rummage sales now I do not hardly see any but considering what they are getting for new ones I am going to keep my eyes open!! I am left handed but if I find any right handed ones I will pick them up also.  I cannot believe what they are getting for recurve and stick bows. I am getting a kick out the crossbow though have always been interested in them, but never bought one before until now as I can hunt with them now. Seems like the crossbow now that I am getting used to it is becoming a deer taker also.  Jim

Well, I don't know why crossbows wouldn't be OK to talk about here, they are a legitimate weapon and legal to use during bow season in several different states. :toast:

I bought a Horton a year ago after I had 2 shoulder surgeries done, I could not pull a bow. But what I found out is it is more of a disadvantage if a second shot is required. Last year I had an opportunity at a big but and shot over it, what I found out was the scope rail adjustment knob move 3 clicks which would move the scope for a 50 yard shot. The deer was at 20 yards. I guess I must have bumped it while climbing into my tree stand. After I shot and missed the deer ran about 10 yards and stopped. I bulled the string back to lock it in and when it clicked in the safe position the deer heard the click sound and took off. Had I been using my Mathews, I would not have missed the first shot and if I somehow did, it is a lot quitter to load a second arrow. So if anyone ever tells you a crossbow is not bow hunting, don't listen to them. A bow is a bow, crossbows kill in the same way as a compound or recurve bow.
So in my book you are a bowhunter. :)

My crossbow reccomended 125 grain 3 blade fixed broadheads or mechanicals. I have heard so much good and bad on the mech ones I am useing the 3 blade fixed on mine. Plus I got a deal on some on a closeout $2.95 for   pac of 3 (Cresent Archery Co. ) they cannot be too bad I killed 2 deer with them so far. :)

I just came to this forum wondering the same question.

After nearly 50 years of shooting stick & compound bows I realize after this bow season that I no longer pull a regular type bow when it gets cold.  My shoulders and more important my back muscles just don't cooperate.

I have decided to buy a crossbow.  Does anyone have any feedback on the Horton Blackhawk 200#?   I can purchase a package for under $300.  Is this a good price?

Thanks for any feed back.

Sounds like a good deal for a package deal.  Like I said mine is a entry level non compound crossbow and it does the job for me so I have found out it does not take the most expensive one to work. You have to just fine tune them like a bow to get the best groups. :) Jim
