We were heading for the hospitol this morning so my wife could be evaluated for traction for her neck and spine. About 12-14 miles from the house a darned turkey flew off the side of the road from a ditch right in front of us. I had maybe 1 second to react, it hit the windshield right in front of my wife, the roof where the glass has to go is even dented.  We were both covered in glass. Police came and escorted me to a body shop just a mile away. I told the officer I had a ccw and was going to get my 38 from the car. He just smiled and said thanks for telling me. Praise the Lord for safety glass. It darned near came all the way through, there is an open slit about a good ft long, an inch wide and pushed way in, right in front of where my wife was sitting. We both had feathers and glass all over us  including front and back seats. . Patty's purse had glass in it, our shoes, even pockets. We showered after getting home and believe we are glass free. Patty wasn't cut but her face is burning from being hit with glass. We were talking and both had glass in our mouths, she more than me, I only noticed one small piece. The officer had a btl of water with him so we could wash our mouths out, pretty sure we got it all. By the way, I know the car is 9 years old but we just paid it off last week.  God is GOOD. the things can be worse than deer because not only do they pop up out of the grass where you can not see them, but then they fly up into windshield height.   they especially scare me when i am on the cycle.

I was comming back from a job out of town this morning . Its about 60-70 miles from the shop . I like to make sure the crews show up at 7am . Anyway comming back i passed a State trooper sitting on the side of I-64 with his lights on . I was in heavy traffic and in the lane next to him so as our law requires i slowed down to pass him. I got to see why he had stopped - a huge Bald Eagle was laying on its back in front of the Police car. The bird is huge . I have seen and had Hawks dive at cars and trucks and wonder if the eagle had done the same and got hit . Shame really it is a beautiful bird.

Happy to hear you both are ok.  A couple of weeks ago I was driving down the interstate at 70 mph when a turkey ran up on the shoulder.  I moved towards the left lane but to late as the turkey took flight.  I had just got my car back from the shop after an attack by a snow plow.  The only thing they didn't replace was the hood.  The turkey took care of that as it was a direct broadside hit on the turkey and a dead center hit on the hood of my suburban.  I was thankful that it chose the hood .  The bird slid across the hood and hit the windshield glancing off the glass and over the car.  I was amazed as I didn't see a big puff of feathers.  I watched the turkeys body land on the other side of the median.  I had three friends with me as we were traveling to a gun show.  They all ducked as the bird came across the hood   I told them it could always be worse and was thankful that no one in the vehicle was hurt

NOPE, didn't keep the bird, hwy dept had it pretty quick. Several years ago a friend had a turkey go right through the grill of his truck, took out the radiator too. He got the truck back several weeks later and was driving down the same road, more slowly this time. He saw some turkeys about the same spot he hit the other one and watched them closely til he was past them. He said to himself, heh, didn't get me this time while looking at them in his mirror. He looked up and here came a big tom flying down the center of the road. Another grill and radiator.
BULLETSTUFFER. If that bird you hit had been several inches higher it would not have slid, but gone right into your windshield. I'd say God was with you too. POWDERMAN.

Ive been traveling through Kentucky lately and have been seeing several large gobblers everywhere. This is from I 65, seen 6 longbeards together in full strut 4-5-10. Probably seen @ 20 struting same day through there, while I was driving, If I was riding as a passenger Im sure Id seen even more. Lots @ 10-20 miles south of bowling green.

When I go back to Tennessee every year I see loads of Turkey.  Back when I was a kid there we heard there was Turkey up in the Eastern part of the state, but never saw any, or met anyone that had either.  Today the Farmers in middle Tennessee hate them.  My cousins hate them when Deer hunting, seems Turkeys always find their blinds or tree stands and raise an alert.  Once that happens the Deer avoid the area.  I see flocks of 25 to 30 birds out in fields or meadows, or in clearing on the hillsides.  There will be flocks of Turkeys on every hill it seems.

Her neck is pretty sore from me braking and her jumping so quickly. Luckily she was looking towards me instead of straigh at it, she didn't even know what hit us til  I told her.  It could have been much worse. POWDERMAN.

YES, it just didn't live to collect it. POWDERMAN.

Almost had the same happen to us almost exactly one mile from our house. There were several turkeys on the side of road and I just knew at least one was gonna do something dumb so I began slowing down and was luckily already down to only 35-40 at most when they made their move right in front of us some walking and some flying across in front of us. I hit the brakes and headed for the side of road where they had been and barely managed to avoid hitting any. Had I not slowed down as soon as I saw them I'd have had the same result you did. Luckily I saw them well back from where they were as it was flat, level and clean with nothing to hide them.

Reminds me of a time a covey of quail flew in front of me on the way to work one morning. I knew I hit at least one as I saw it go bouncing off the windshield. When I got to work and parked I noticed another stuck to the grill with its head inside and body hanging out. Glad those weren't turkeys.

I know the feeling- Glad all are OK.
Don't know which is worse a turkey or a buzzard---the buzzard was pretty foul smelling.

Charlie:  Glad to read that you and the wife survived that incident without injury.  Last year my brother, a retired Air Force Chaplin was leaving the air base and as he pulled onto a major secondary road he noticed that a tropper had fallen in a car length behind him.  My brother knew the speed limit was 55 so he set his cruise on 54 and just as he did that a big Tom Turkey flew right into his windshield - he was lucky as the bird actually rolled off the windshield but he looked in his rearview mirror and saw the bird flip over onto the hood of the trooper's car, and then saw the trooper put on his lights and pull him over.  When the trooper got to my brother's car my brother asked why he had been pulled over as he was only doing 54 in a 55mph zone, and the trooper said he pulled my brother over for flipping him the bird....... did anyone see that one coming??

Just last week on my road 2 flew right in front of me with one going over the roof and the other right accross the hood, but I was only going 20-25 mph. Last weekend was youth turkey hunt and the kids never got a shot.

 I'm Pleased to see that neither of you were hurt ! I have collected a pheasant in the same part of my truck before, but with no dammage ..smaller bird, slower speed. But between the wife and I, we have harvested 4 deer over the years, and they did enough damage. I don't envy my family members who live in Alaska, moose are a bit tougher yet.
  On that downed eagle..if you are out hunting or driving and come upon a dead bald eagle, you should report it to authorities, and DON'T TOUCH IT !  I guess it's your choice whether to report it or not...but NO SOUVENIRS !! Being caught with a bald eagle feather costs $5,000 and puts you on the "suspect list" with some authorities.

Glad you and your wife are okay, those big birds are fairly serious projectiles.  About 10 years ago I let my business partner take my pickup truck to run and get lunch for one of our crews on a construction site.  He came back in about 5 minutes without food or most of the passenger side windshield.  Did the same think you did, just lucky no one was in the passenger seat of my truck.  The bird also smashed the top of the roof in about 6 inches.  The bird went into the ditch but it lefts it's innards in the inside of my truck with some on my business partner.  He was not amused or was the laborer I had clean the truck out.

After hours on the phone with 4 or 5 different insurance people we finally got the ok to get it fixed. Get this, the adjuster called from MICHIGAN. We're with  AAA. POWDERMAN.
