Do I need a high end electronic caller
« on: April 09, 2010, 07:49:27 AM »
I am thinking about getting an electronic caller for calling yotes. From looking at some previous posts it seems that many of the cheaper calls either do not have the volume or a variety of calls. I live in south central Kansas which means we have a lot of wind much if the time. Would I need a caller with a higher volume due to wind conditions? I am kind of hesitant about spending the money that a Fox Pro appears to cost. Other alternatives? What are you all seeing for Fox Pro prices in your area?

A good open reed mouth call can get through the wind just fine and make any sound you want to make with it, so IMO you don't need an electronic caller at all.    ;)

No doubt FoxPro has the following, but the Dillion boys are sure proud of them price wise.    And with the constant model upgrades they keep doing they are going to keep getting more and more expensive too.    After all, do you really need to have 500/1000 sounds?   ::)

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Funny thing about calls is what the critter has heard before and educated to. Also using the correct call at the correct time is important . Some critters will come to anything others hang up . A caller that gives the most options would seem best .

Agreed with Ladobe,

Before you spend $$ on a foxpro, you might try a closed reed on a few outings to see if this is something that you enjoy doing.

I can remember wanting a Johnny Stewart elect call back in the early 70's so bad that i could taste it but it was not to be afforded, by the time I could afford one, I was well versed in the close reeds and never looked back. I did put together a couple homemades with the Radio Shack mini amp (told elsewhere on this forum) and they worked well. It did not take my Son & Sil long to commander both units.

I did not get into the open reed calls until 86' or so compliments of Bill Austin. They take more practice but will do everything Ladobe was saying.

I agree.  Try some closed reed calls or even a bite call.  They are easy to use and they call in critters.  Just make sure your downwind is well observed.

I have had foxpro, Minaska, western Rivers, and Johnny Stewart electronic calls.  All remote.  I have to say that I am a huge fan of the Johnny Stewart Premaster and preymaster remote.  They are fairly inexpensive, and IMO have the best sounds.
It's all a hot mess...........

I down loaded calls onto my son's old I-Pod.  (His mother gave him a newer model) Hooked that to a Cass Creek, Big Horn speaker, and I got what I wanted.  No CDs or tapes to mess with or carry.  The trick was learning how to operate the I-Pod.  An inexpensive MP-3 player would also work.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
