.357 max. at the range
« on: April 09, 2010, 07:23:55 PM »
Took the max to the range today, shooting horn. 180 ss/pb groups were about 9" [1:183/4 twist] barrel hates these bullets out of the max., get good groups with speer 180 fn, but what I cant figger out is why when I shoot the horn. ss/pb with 360 DW I get about 1.215" group, anybody got any ideas why other than the obveous thats what the barrel likes? All shots are at 100 yrds.

Check bullet runout, your seater die may not be working with the spitzer bullet and seats the bullet crooked, any runout over .003" will affect accuracy.

EXACTLY!!

The spitzer bullet profile will cause problems in a "pistol" style bullet seater. Most pistol bullets are flat or round, almost never pointy!!  I took an extra seater and drilled it. This allowed the point of the SSP to be properly supported and seat square and true.

There is nothing inherently inaccurate about this bullet.

I drilled my bullet seater out befor I started loading spitzer type bullet after reading some of the posts by others on here, the first time I shot these I got about a 1 1/2" group but that was a one shot wonder because I have not been abel to do it sense but I do get great groups with 158 and 180 xtp's and I get fair groups with speer 180 flat nose .358" bullets and I'm getting about 1.2" groups shooting the ss/pb loaded in 360 DW all out of the same handi. Swaped stocks around and going to the range tomorrow, the one thing I did not try is removing the forend, if I still have problems will try that, may load some up and try to match the vell. of the 360 and see what that does. Thanks for the help, took some and roled them on a flat tabel no wobel dont have any other way to tell if they are crooked or not.

I could never get mine to shoot the SSPs very well, It dose great with any other 180 like XTPs or LBT style cast bullets.

May have found the load, went to the range today droped the load to 19.0 gr. of w296 same as the speer load tightened the groups a lot down to about 2" now I can start playing with the load and see if I can tighten it a bit, dont know what the vell. is next time I'll take the chrony.
