well i used to do a lot of night rat hunting and i always would climb up into a tree.  Have you ever used a tree stand for coyote hunting or other predator and varmint?

It is Illegal to hunt predators from a tree stand here but yet legal to use any caliber of handgun or rifle (while on private property) along with a night vision monocular or even a night vision scope. Go figure.

I use a tree stand in Alabama for predators, daytime only.
I don't hunt at night.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Using a tree stand is a very popular way to hunt them around my area.

What most guys do after they get a deer from there stand is use the gut pile as bait and come back later the same day or next morning and sit in the stand for coyotes. This method is very effective especially for those who use shotguns or crossbows to coyote hunt with as it allows you to get very close to them undetected. Plus its kind of neat to see how yotes stalk through the woods,  no other way to see that other then from a good ambush point like a tree stand.
