454 Casull dies
« on: April 10, 2010, 05:47:42 PM »
I just picked up a 45 colt handi rifle and I am thinking of reaming it to 454 casull. My question is can I use 454 cassull dies to reload 45 colt ? I would like to save some cash and only buy one set of dies.

Thanks in advance
Wayne

First thing, are you sure the NEF Handi will handle the high pressure of the 454 Casull?

As for loading if you buy 45 Colt dies, you can reload for both.  I first bought 454 Casull dies and then later purchased a 45 Colt and the Casull dies wouldn’t crimp the shorter case.  I fixed it buy using a LEE crimping die.

Like yopper said you may have problems with crimping and also with flarring with the longer dies. Useually works better to use short dies on a long case then the other way around

The Hornady 454 set works fine for 45 colt, and comes with a taper crimp die, which the 45 colt set does not include.

I have a 454 Handi and I load it in RCBS 45COLT dies, no problems at all... I agree with Yopper, the casull is longer and crimping would likely be an issue.

The handi will handle the pressures just fine.
