i attended a tea party rally today...
« on: April 10, 2010, 06:10:17 PM »
  Yes, I wanted to "see for myself"..and what I saw was refreshing.
   Now, put your favorite news source to the test; here's what everybody agreed upon over and over:

   The Tea Party is not;

1) All Republicans

2) Rednecks

3) Racist (all ethnics were there, cheering)

4) A political party

5) Spouting hatred

6) Preaching unlawful activities.

      THe Tea Party is made up of

1) Constitutionalists.

2) Those who want limited government.

3) A high percentage of Christians.

4) Those who especially hold a strong liking for the 1st and 2nd amendments.

5) Lovers of freedom.

6) Those who hate "tax & spend" policies.

7) Those who want LIMITED government.

  That's just a few "high points"; while I personally carried a sign (with appropriate graphics) which said;

         "I am a blacksmith"

         "I enjoy my hammer and anvil"

         "I detest your hammer and sickle"

               I was called up onto the podium and I gave them a bit of "politicking and preaching" in my best drill sergeant's voice... :D ;D
    ...Many claimed they liked my message....

I thought the next round of tea party rallies in NY state were planned for "Tax Day" April 15th. Kudos to your group for not waiting. Where was it?

Crusty;
  That was held in Olean, NY ..in the heart of "The Enchanted Mountains"...well that's what the chamber of commerce calls 'em ! :D
  Olean is the only place in our county that can be called a city (pop about 15,000). The crowd was good though, and the meeting was held in a park near center of town (Lincoln park). Speaking platform was one of those old-fashioned octoganal bandstands.
   Lots of support from passing traffic, after all outside the major cities and close in suburbs, NY is actually a very red state.... And My very vocal support of the 2nd amendment brought a big round of applause.
    BTW: Olean is the home of Alcas and Kabar cutlery and I delivered the speech about a mile from Alcas and 2 miles from Kabar's shop.

  CORRECTION:
 I found a photo on Flickr, showing the actual park & bandstand..
   My speech was primarily directed toward those politicians who have tried to ignore and silence specific groups e.g. Christians, gun owners and advocates for personal rights.

Excellent IG!!

Wish that we had a recording.  Nothing like spontaneous oratory from a guy that is passionate about what he believes.
Let's hope that some of those evil politicians, who would rule us, heard your words and pee'd their pants.

Great sign btw.

Glad to hear it went well. I hope the tea party can get better organised and finaly get a strong figurehead to lead. The USA does not now have a leader. We are operating in a vacuum. Historically, when that happens, a dictatorship occurs. I hope the tea party gains strength way before election time.

There's a Tea Party going on in nearby Jonesboro Thursday, I'll probably end up going. I think I'll send a message to my local newspaper to see if they'll cover it.

  here's the local story, when you get down to a fellow named Charlie Briggs..his little impromptu speech  was a "barn burner" he was very passionate ! Like myself, he did not come prepared to speak, but did very well My name is not mentioned (which is good) probably because I was late for an appointment and had to rush off as soon as I was done.

Okla. tea parties and lawmakers envision militia
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100412/ap_on_re_us/us_tea_party_militia

OKLAHOMA CITY – Frustrated by recent political setbacks, tea party leaders and some conservative members of the Oklahoma Legislature say they would like to create a new volunteer militia to help defend against what they believe are improper federal infringements on state sovereignty.

Tea party movement leaders say they've discussed the idea with several supportive lawmakers and hope to get legislation next year to recognize a new volunteer force. They say the unit would not resemble militia groups that have been raided for allegedly plotting attacks on law enforcement officers.

"Is it scary? It sure is," said tea party leader Al Gerhart of Oklahoma City, who heads an umbrella group of tea party factions called the Oklahoma Constitutional Alliance. "But when do the states stop rolling over for the federal government?"

Thus far, the discussions have been exploratory. Even the proponents say they don't know how an armed force would be organized nor how a state-based militia could block federal mandates. Critics also asserted that the force could inflame extremism, and that the National Guard already provides for the state's military needs.

"Have they heard of the Oklahoma City bombing?" said Joseph Thai, a constitutional law professor at the University of Oklahoma. The state observes the 15th anniversary of the anti-government attack on Monday. Such actions could "throw fuel in the fire of radicals," he said.

But the militia talks reflect the frustration of some grass roots groups seeking new ways of fighting recent federal initiatives, such as the health reform plan, which requires all citizens to have health insurance. Over the last year, tea party groups across the country have staged rallies and pressured politicians to protest big government and demand reduced public spending.

In strongly conservative states like Oklahoma, some legislators have also discussed further action to fight federal policies, such as state legislation and lawsuits.

State Sen. Randy Brogdon, R-Owasso, a Republican candidate for governor who has appealed for tea party support, said supporters of a state militia have talked to him, and that he believes the citizen unit would be authorized under the Second Amendment to the Constitution.

The founding fathers "were not referring to a turkey shoot or a quail hunt. They really weren't even talking about us having the ability to protect ourselves against each other," Brogdon said. "The Second Amendment deals directly with the right of an individual to keep and bear arms to protect themselves from an overreaching federal government."

Another lawmaker, state Rep. Charles Key, R-Oklahoma City, said he believes there's a good chance of introducing legislation for a state-authorized militia next year.

Tea party leader J.W. Berry of the Tulsa-based OKforTea began soliciting interest in a state militia through his newsletter under the subject "Buy more guns, more bullets."

"It's not a far-right crazy plan or anything like that," Berry said. "This would be done with the full cooperation of the state Legislature."

State militias clearly are constitutionally authorized, but have not been used in recent times, said Glenn Reynolds, a law professor at the University of Tennessee and an expert on the Second Amendment. "Whether someone should get a militia to go toe-to-toe with the federal government ... now, that strikes me as kind of silly," he said.

Some conservative legislators in Oklahoma say talk of a militia, which would be privately recruited, armed and trained, goes too far.

"If the intent is to create a militia for disaster relief, we have the National Guard," said Sen. Steve Russell, R-Oklahoma City, a retired Army lieutenant colonel. "Anything beyond that purpose should be viewed with great concern and caution."

Democratic Gov. Brad Henry's communications director Paul Sund also discounted the militia discussion, saying the National Guard handles state emergencies and security.

Federal authorities say that radical militia groups have not emerged in Oklahoma, unlike many other states, in part because of the legacy of the Oklahoma City bombing. On April 19, 1995, an anti-government conspiracy led by Army veteran Tim McVeigh exploded a truckbomb outside the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people.

Last month, FBI agents conducted a raid on the Hutaree militia group in southern Michigan and accused members of plotting to kill law enforcement officers.

(This version CORRECTS the spelling of building from Alfred P. Murray to Murrah

We're going to the tax day one in B-ham.  They had one in Anniston Saturday, but we had TKD testing and baseball.  Sure sucks to drive over an hour when they had one in our backyard.  Family first is our motto, so we will have to make the drive next week, but I am looking forward to seeing what it is about myself.  Being a STRICT constitutionalist it is rare that I find anyone in politics who have my views.  We will see.

Tommyt ,you are apparently one of those folks that want to smear the Tea party folks and try to discredit them! They have no links to any militia, or anyone else trying to incite violence! I saw on the tube where the left is going to infiltrate them and do things at their rallies to try to make them look bad. You can bet if they do the MSM will jump on it like a dog on a bone.

I found it interesting to watch the folks that drove by the little rally that I attended.  There were a good number of folks who honked and gave a thumbs up.  By far, though, most passersby had a blank. or vacant look on their face and you could almost see them thinking--"I wonder what the hell is going on."  The same thing they are thinking each and every day of their lives.

I happened to be going through town when I saw the crowd and guessed what it was even though I had no idea there was one planned in our town. Stopped for an hour or so. I saw a lot of folks just come by and sign the petitions and leave again, folks who had to work for a living.

I disagree that the tea party needs a leader, that would mean some sort of politician. I have the feeling that the party should remain what it is, mostly plain everyday folks who see politicians as a necessary evil. What I hope to see from them are endorsements for politicians. This needs to happen at the primary level so that the Republican party can be  "repaired"

From my northern point of view the tea party folks want to be heard and taken seriously not feared in the sense of civil disorder or uprising.

wreckhog;
      I see no disconnect whatever ! Where in the world did you get the idea the Tea Party wanted to be FEARED ? Likely you were NOT at any rally, because there is no indication they (we) want to be "feared", actually what they really want is for the PEOPLE to be RESPECTED..a whole different scenario.
   Don't you agree that the citizens should be respected by their elected officials ?

At a big rally in Lou yesterday the paper said militia members dressed in camo with rifles showed up. Surpisedly the media did a fairly good job reporting and did not dwell on an armed militia like I expected. POWDERMAN.  :o :o
