6 inch 686
« on: April 11, 2010, 03:34:28 AM »
Well, got tired of waiting and missing out on the used market, so I broke down and bought a new 686 from a local dealer.  Unfortunately I have to wait for the adoption papers to come through before I can take her home.
Now that I have something I need some advice on reloading and what accessories to buy.  I think I would like to stick to plated bullets to reduce lead exposure/fouling.  What bullet/weight do you recommend for target use.  Any pet loads appreciated.  I assume that since this gun is rated for .357, then any 38+P and +p+ loads are acceptable, although for target I will likely stick with fairly mild loads.  What sort of holster should I purchase?
Any other information/advice appreciated.
Thanks,
Swamp

I think you may have been fortunate to find any 686. Gun sales are still very brisk here in the far west. 38/357 loads have been discussed more than the Bible. Try; handloads.com ,its  easy to use, lots of data.

My 6'' 686s like 158s. Bulk JHPs/JHPs over 15-15.5 gr of H110 for serious stuff or 7.5 gr of Unique for plinkin'. The 686 will hold up to any round that falls within SAMMI specs and come back for more. It will do this for as long as you own it and then continue to do it for your kids after you're gone. I use a Bianchi drop holster for hunting.

I just had my 1990 or so vintage 6" 686 out yesterday for a going over/cleaning. I took the grips & cylinder off & all was looking great. This gun locks up tighter than just about any revolver I own. If I'm looking for a 357 I usually take my much more used Security-Six. I didn't intentionally do it but my 686 is showroom new. That's one fine revolver though.

I use the Skeeter Skelton load in my 6" 686.  Lyman 358156 (with GC removed) over a good dose of 2400.
