35 Remington
« on: April 11, 2010, 04:49:30 AM »
Who has one? I am hunting brass for newly acquired one. I know Larry reamed one for someone (can't remember who) and I figured there was more than one out there.

You lucky dog!  I have 2 35 Remingtons at present, a 14 inch barreled Contender and a 1957 Marlin. They both shoot better than I could ask and the rounds ballistics are such that on game performance is perfect. I got my brass by buying Remington factory ammo at a Dick's sporting goods store when it was on sale for $15. a box and I got 4 boxes. As the Contender's chamber is different a bit than my Marlin chamber I had to seperate the brass for the two guns.

I have an old pre-crossblock safety marlin and it still shoots tight groups.  The factory is cheap enough that I don't reload for it.  I already reload for too many calibers now!

Brass for the .35 Rem. can be hard to find with most manufacturers just making seasonal runs.

I wouldn't let that stop you, it's more common than 357Max brass, and factory ammo is available over the counter.  ;)

.35 Remingtons's are still popular here in forested New England and ammo is readily available. A Handi in .35 is a great hunting rifle, congratulations on getting one....<><....:)

I recently had Wayne York rechamber a 357 barrel for me to a 35 Remington. So far I have only shot reduced loads consisting of 158 grain commercial cast bullets over small charges of Accurate #5. Those loads are fun, but what I am really curious about are Super  35 loads with 180 gr. and 200 gr. hard cast bullets and 200 gr. and 225 gr. spitser type bullets.

The throat of this barrel seems to be very short, so I may send it back to Wayne and have him ream it out so that these bullets can be seated further out of the case to allow for more powder capacity.

I acquired my Remington brass from Cabela's. The last time I looked on-line, it was on sale.

Mine was short throated too, so I rented a reamer from 4D and did it myself, I was impatient and didn't want to wait to have it done.

Sorry guys it ain't a Handi I just knew some of you had them and would know where to find brass. Looks like I will be buying the Rem. 150 grain off the shelf. I am going to be casting for it and the 357 when I get the mold here. I have 100 once fired brass loaded with 148 grain SJHP right now.

When you rent a reamer, does it arrive with everything you need to do the job? Directions? I have never done any of this kind of work on rifle barrels and don't want to screw it up so that the barrel is useless. I looked in the FAQs and could not find a detailed description of how to complete a throat job.

Thanks,

Nope, all you get is a reamer from 4D, Elk Ridge provides some instructions and I think they have some info on their website. If you can get Fred at 4D on the phone, he'll talk with ya. Best advice is keep the reamer straight as possible with no side pressure and only make a turn at a time or you may go too deep or cut the throat egg shaped, make a dummy round that has minimal runout so you can use it to test depth with. Maybe someone else will offer advice that has more experience, I've only done three 45-70s and the 35 Rem, they all shoot extremely well, so I must not have done too much wrong!!  ;D

As you probably know, the 200 grainers are pretty much standard.  They hit hard at woods ranges even in standard loadings.  Love my 35s.  Getting a new thumbhole stock for my DIY custom 35 Whelen.  Those old savage actions are incredibly strong.  Just two lugs - but theyre big lugs.  Can't wait.

That be me.  Love it.  Found that it likes the factory 150 grain loading so I ended up with five boxes.  No brass to be found locally.  I ordered bullets but forget to check brass.  Can't help out.  Enjoy.  I killed my first deer with the 35 rem in a rem 760 and the same factory loading.  Very effective on deer.

Good luck,

Jerry

.35 Remington makes a nice pistol cartridge.  I have a T/C Contender in .35 Remington.  Have taken Caribou with it.

I have a .35 Whelen so I don't need a .35 Rem.

Well mine ain't gonna be much more than a pistol. I got it for hog hunting and it is at my smiths now being chopped to 16.25", having the bolt polished, the barrel polished and the overall rebuild of a 90 year old rifle.
