Virginia Open'er

  Been hunt'n Turkeys for almost 40 years,but I'll take luck over experence anyday. :)

  Got this 'Ole Boy' Saturday Morn'n at 7:20 = 22 1/2lb's - 9 3/4" Beard and 1 1/8" X 1 1/4" Spur's.

   Look's like a good year come'n along,,,,,,, :)

Hey, that's my turkey!!!  I was looking all over the place for him Saturday, but couldn't find him anywhere.

Nice bird.  I just heard this week on TV (of all places) that luck is where knowledge and hard work meet.

Now I'll take a turn at shamelessly bragging.
I got this one a couple minutes before the noon bell.
I had banking errands and couldn't get out there and settled until about 11-AM.
This guy came on the run.
Stopped him at 31 steps with a 454 revolver.
Good thing too 'cause he meant business.
9"+ beard and 1 1/8" spurs.
Didn't weigh him but he seemed like 50 lbs by the time I got him back to the truck.
I've never seen one come quite that fast so late in the day.
I guess God was calling him home and I was the messenger.

Nice shooting with the 454! I am happy to knock one down with my shotgun and you are out there getting down with a wheel gun! Kudos

Daman - It's a 12Ga. Turkey Barrel - 23" on a TC Encore.

Terbltim - What kind of load ya use'n the the 454 ?

Plinker,
I got that turkey with my "old reliable" load:
It's a Lee C452-300-RF cast bullet, sized w/ a .454" die, lubed w/ LBT Blue-Soft, and launched at around 1300 fps, (slightly over half-power for this gun & cartridge.)
This load is suitable for hunting nearly anything in the 7.5" RSR.
That Lee cast bullet is excellent for handgun hunting under 100 yards.
It has a big meplat (.37+") that makes a good wound-channel at impact velocities as low as 750-fps.
That load is a bit much for turkey though and I'm already working on another even-milder load for game under 100 lbs. (Same bullet going at or just under 1100 fps.)
If I can get minute-of-soda-can at 35 steps (100 feet) I'm ready to hunt.
Also for turkey, you have to wait for a good target-view of the "innards" and make a carefully aimed shot or it'll tear up a lot of the bird, (another reason to step-down the power.)
Spring turkey hunting is waaay-cool!

Terbltim - Thanks for the reply.
  I would think you would need a reduced load to have anything left.
 I have shot a few with a .50Cal Muzzle loader in the fall and it punched a neat hole right threw.

I Used a round ball from a TC Hawken a couple of times and the same roundball from at Tenn. Mtn. rifle, both 50 cal. and all neck-shots (where the neck meets the body.)
Makes a clean job of it every time.
I'd have shot into the body but the shot set-ups were just too good each time.
I've got no complaint about shotguns but I prefer a "traditional style" muzzle-loader rifle over anything for turkeys.
I'm using the handguns now out of plain ol' laziness.
Easier to tote and if I get one I can brag, if I don't like the shot I can leave it and no one thinks I've done wrong.
No down sides, unless you count having to pass on shots any muzzle-loader could easily take.
