9mm and coyote
« on: April 11, 2010, 12:55:39 PM »
How will a9mm do against a coyote?  In my neighborhood there are a lot ( to me ) of coyotes, I've seen 10-15 at one time.  Will my nine put them down?  I just want to keep my pets from beeing eaten.  Any suggestions would be very helpfull.  Thanks in advancs....lost

They'd better be close if you plan on shooting 'em with a 9mm.

But more power to you if they will let you get that close, im sure the 9mm will bring one down with any good HP load if shot in the vitals at a reasonable range. Let us know how you do.

Yes. I killed 4 at one time with my Taurus 92 9mm in my cow lot. They were all between 10 and 25 yards. They had dug into the pen and I cornered them up and commenced to unload. It was all I had with me is the only reason it got the call, but it done its job and well. Shoot the in the front shoulder with FMJ.

Daman, I bet that was fun and exciting. You da Executioner ;D

lostchild, I hope you will be very careful unloading a 9mm in your neighborhood if there are any houses around. A guy stopped by a couple years ago and asked if I knew of anyone shooting. He said a large cal. bullet came through his living room wall and his daughter was sitting in there. Almost like your name.

I'm sure a 9mm will put a hurt on them if hit good at a fair distance.

It was very fun! A little unnerving. Coyotes are a little more aggressive when they are cornered.

That's what I was thinking ;D  Glad you didn't need a bigger gun.

If lostchild is seeing 15 at a time he may want to carry an extra magazine when walking his pets :o Don't let them surround you ;)

Thank you all very much for your replies,  I live in a trailer park so placement of shots has to be just right.   When I walk my pups on a leash I'm pretty close to the lunch on a string so the range won't be long 20 ft .  These coyotes came in right under a streetlight  about 15 yds away  ( did'nt think that I or the pups could run that fast ) so now I carry my 9mm just in case ( worst case )  I just needed to know if a 9mm would stop them if worst came to worst.  Again thank you all for the replies. .....lost

I gut shot one with my 4" 44 mag early, early thisspring.  she twitched real good, stopped, nawed at the exit wumd, and then lit the after burner.I shot the heart out of a small bitch coyote from about forty yards, running with a hornady xtp.  bullet went strraight thru, not much sign of expansion, but i shot her low in the chest, and she was small. She wobbled, stumblwed, and dragged herself another fifty yards.  Gut shot one was a Lyman Devastaor at aprox 1200 feet pers econd.  apparently not enough meat to cause full expansion.
No pistol bullet is made for tarts that small and thin.  Hit them in the chest, or better, break the spine, and you will anchor them.  anywhere else, you will probably lose them.
