Submarine in a farm pond !
« on: April 11, 2010, 04:46:38 PM »
Biggest Bass I have ever saw, I thought it was a beaver swimming by
until it got within about 10 yards of me. I threw everything except my
tackle box to this thing and it would not touch any of it.
I literally spent 7 hours today after this fish. It is a 3 acre pond
so I saw him many times. I have no doubt that if I do ever get this one
on the bank, I am seeing dollar signs. This thing is a monster.
This pond has not been fished in 25 years and my brother already pulled
an 11 pounder out of it. This one dwarfed his.  5 and 6 pounders
are the norm in this pond. I have had 15 pound test line poped 4 times already
so there are some BIG fish in there.
I was shaking like I had a giant whitetail buck in front of me!
Bass Fever I guess ;D

So how big do you think this fish is?  I believe the Georgia state record is also the world record isn't it?  That must be one big fish!  BT

we thought we'd found such a monster in my Uncle's large pond.   It hadn't been fished in many a year.   We finally borrowed a large commercial fish net and strung it across the pond.   After dark  the pond came to life with all the splashing and tugging on the net.   We pulled in hundreds of pounds of large 20# buffalo Carp.

having trouble posting, maybe this one will work.
I thought carp too until it opened its mouth.
This fish is massive! It will easily rival the record,
I have no doubt. Will try live bait next time I go.
There is a Goose nesting on the beaver lodge at the lake,
I kept thinking today that those goslings have no chance.

A fly rod! It would have to be one for salt water.

If it truely is a record fish and you manage to catch it, be sure to have all your ducks in a row.  Know where an official weigh station is.   Very important, KEEP IT ALIVE!!!!!!  Have a witness!  A record fish is worth a lot of money.  A dead record fish, weighed on a grocery store scale is only good for dinner.

I might add it is the current world record and it was recently "tied" by an angler form Japan.

This is 2/3rds of it...The officials will even dispute your fishing line but I believe that you can purchase line that is guaranteed to be within spec on the tensil strenght.

Well it's pre spawn here , and the ones I cleaned a couple of days ago, had small sacks of eggs in them. That bass is probably patrolomg and guarding a nest, before it lays it's eggs. I used a swimming lure to get down there with them and close to their nests, but all wouldn't take the bate. In about a week they'll hit anything that gets close to the nest.

My dad has been loosing baby ducks on his pond for a couple years and had blamed it on the BIG catfish or bass he has put in there 10-15 years ago. Last week I was at the nursing home seeing mom and dad was there and he told me he killed a wood duck on the pound with his 30-06 for " pestering" the Mallards that was nesting. The house is about 150 yards from the pond (small lake) and I am guessing he shot if off the front porch. He put the gun up and was walking to the pond to get the duck out of the water when he saw the water boil over and the duck disappear. He said not sure if it was a big fish or a turtle but had not seen any turtles in the pond..

My Bad I read the post wrong.  He and his father were both visiting the nursing home.  ::) I also thought about what could happen if a 30-06 got into the wrong hands! :o :o   So I'm going with gator too or in some waters (not a pond) a muskie.  BT

Never seen a gater in a Penrod Kentucky farm pond.

I have not spoke to him this week. I would bet if it was a fish it would be found this week floating. I would not think a fish could digest that many duck feathers. I do remember him putting in a 25# or so flat head catfish in there about 15-20 years ago.

Hey Rdmallory,  Good point - Thanks for shedding some light on the subject.  There was a picture floating around on the net a couple of years ago of a catfish with a basketball stuck in it's mouth, so a big bird would not be out of the question if the cat was big enough.   BT

As far as the duck disappearance I would lean toward a big ole snappin turtle.

I am currently deployed to Iraq, and where we work at is in one of the Palaces here. We feed the fish, and a few people have seen the big carp eat some baby geese and ducks, or so they claim. I have seen some huge carp here though.

Carp can get really big!!  I caught a 25 pounder once on a top water plug while bass fishing.  I was astounded. :o :o  I know carp are bottom feeders but this one slammed a rapala.  At first I thought I had a world record bass then a giant yellow tail came out of the water.

S.S.

You need to get out there before first light.  I like to go out at 3:30am the early mornings is my best time to catch the biggest hogs.  There in close to shore feeding and ambushing the baitfish from the late evenings to early mornings.  My topwater spooks have been the best to use but for going below the surface i use the rebel BIG Claw crawfish crankbait in chartruese/black back.  It can dive up to 10ft but it also floats so the slower you reel it the shallower it will stay.  I also can stop it and use it as a topwater lure too.

I always use a scent too like baitmate bass or the YUM scents.

These big bass are big because there smart too.  I try to stay as stealthy as i can too and try to make no noise too.  I avoid stepping on rocks near the shoreline too they can send noise into the water telling the fish your there too.

One more fact is these bigger bass eat sunfish too. You could get a sunfsih lure at TClark Custom baits on the net or use real sunfish with a big hook in them too. The bigger bass want a meal not a snack.

Bass Pro Shops offers a very large senko type bait called the stick o worm too its 7 1/4" long as as round as your middle finger.  Remember big bait big fish.

I been in the hunt for a new state record which is 12lb 14oz and i have up to 10lbs so far. But like you I have seen bigger fish swim by me too.
