Hello from Lake Oconee
« on: April 12, 2010, 04:08:03 AM »
Hi fellas, I'm new here and thought I would say hello.  I live at Lake Oconee, love hunting and fishing.  I am a knife maker and also like any type of shooting, firearms, traditional archery, and life in general.
Hunting grounds are in Hancock Co., and wherever I catch up with the Trad Bowhunters of Ga organized hunts at different WMAs.

So, are you saying it's a bit slow?

Well, look how long it's been since you posted and check how many responses you've got!   ::)  Just kidding, we've got a great bunch here and I'm sure more will stop by when they get a chance... maybe... I hope...   :-\   :D

I picked that hokey name many years ago when first signing on with an ISP.  Back when you paid for internet time by the minute!  When they asked for a screen name I couldn't think of anything and there was this TV show, LA LAW, and I was a divorce lawyer at the time so...   :P

Welcome aboard. This place needs to be kick started all along. Us Georgia folks tend to forget how to talk during hunting and fishing season. ;D

My brother inlaw makes knives also up around Young Harris. Tried my hand at it a few times but hated to sell it when it was done. Gave one to a friend for a Christmas gift and almost got sick one afternoon when he pulled it out of his truck and started hacking away on an old tree top. :o To much pride and time invested to watch something like that happen.

Yes, now we are on fire!
Cannonkrazy, I kow how you feel.  No matter how well a knife is made, it is a knife and now a screwdriver, hammer, or machete. (unless it is made like a camp knife/bowie knife, which is not my specialty)
Was going to go bowfishing today, but something got in the way. Now we are looking at Friday.
Just for giggles, here are a couple of my latest knives....hope you like them.
Thanks for the kind reception.  Dan

You can buy a ready made blade from a number of places, put on a handle and make a sheath, I can walk you through the steps over the phone or by email.
Then from there, you can go as far as you want to go.

Yep knife making can be a simple task or it can become an addiction. You can start for as little as some basic tools and then grow to a shop full of expensive equipment. Notice the terms basic tools and expensive equipment. :o :o :o
Blades aren't very expensive and this is the best way for a beginner to learn how to acheive a good fit and finish.
I worked in a machine shop for years and this gave me plenty of time and opprotunity to make my own blades.

Well, I'm makin a patch knife from a hacksaw blade and deer antler now, plus I've got 2 green river blades with scales from curly maple and bone, but it's the stack of old files I've got that interest me the most!   ;D

Time is the big problem.   :-\  I figure I'll finish the first three in a couple a years...  ::)

Nice lookin work there Dan!

Thanks guys!
My first knife was from an old file.  I ground away with a little 6" bench grinder, kept the blade cool by dipping in water.  Knife is still in use, by the way.  Dan

If you like Dan's knives you should examine his work at Massonknives.com    Dan makes knives for folks who intend to use them.  They usually arent big knives but are of good size for getting in and doing the deed after the shot.  That doesnt mean they have to be nondescript.  Dan has a great eye for style and detail.  rp
