H&R ultra .308 ammo problems
« on: April 12, 2010, 06:24:07 PM »
Hello everyone, I've been pouring over these forums looking for an answer to my specific problem but no luck so far.  Just brought home a NIB ultra hunter in .308, opened up the action, stuck in a remington factory 150 grain fmj round and *thud* action won't close.  Upon closer inspection, the cartridge sticks out just a tiny bit from the end of the chamber despite me trying to push it in manually. I took the barrel off and cleaned it all out while removing any excess oil.  No matter how I close it, I cannot get the action to click shut.  Is it possible that I really am unlucky enough to pick up the one box of factory ammo that doesn't fit? Or have other people had problems with their chabers being too short?

Welcome! Sounds like it was incompletely reamed with the finish reamer. Give H&R a call to make arrangements to have it repaired, ask them to send a return shipping label to cover shipping costs, toll free (866)776-9292.

You should make sure the ejector/extractor isn't causing the problem.  ;)

Thanks for the speedy response, even though I was afraid of having to send it in so soon  :-\ . It's the newer model with just an extractor and I can push the extractor itself slightly past flush with the chamber.  Also rounds go in and out just fine, just not quite all the way in.  Anyway I'll maybe try one more type of ammo before I give H&R a call.  It looks and feels great so I can't wait to shoot it even with the temporary setback.

It's always possible it's defective ammo, but not too likely.

Small update:

Tried some other types of factory ammo without success, so I took it to a local gunsmith I know personally.  He did some quick inspection and headspace checking to confirm that yes it indeed has either a short cylinder or too much carbon buildup at the end of the chamber.  Sad day that I had to pick the ONE bad rifle in a line of great ones, but I'm confident it will be a great gun once this little problem is fixed up.
