Headed Stateside...

Looks like sometime in July I should be leaving nice, cool, green Germany for dry, hot, brown, dusty San Antonio.  We'll spend about 14 months there and then I'll retire and find a job somewhere else.  Can you believe that my family picked San Antonio over Montgomery, Alabama?  I'm still in shock.  The Air Force offered a choice so I let the family decide... that's what I get for telling them I had a choice right?  From what I hear, the hunting is so expensive there I won't be doing too much of it.  Wish me luck... hard core Sooner fan in south Texas... well, at least I'm armed.

Hey man, welcome back to the world--such as it is.  Sorry we've let it get to be such a mess, but some of us are trying to tidy it up. 

Thank you so much for you service.  If you get tired of San Antonio--go west young man--go west.  We've got unlimited hunting, fishing and greenery out here and very little dust.

Welcome back to the states.  Big difference between Alabama and San Antonio.  Hunting in Texas is hard, and expensive.  How else are those old ranchers going to pay their taxes.  You messed up big time, letting the family make that decision.  But maybe it can be used to your advantage when it comes time to make that last move.  Don't let them forget it.

It might be cheaper to give your relatives back in Oklahoma a call and drive back up here to hunt.

I've already thought of that... we have a little bit of land out by Vici.  I could go hunt there.  If it hasn't been sold another part of the family has a section just southeast of Duncan.  Could go there.  At the least I'd like to be able to hog hunt down in Texas.  Sounds to me like they have a huge problem with hogs down there.  You'd think the savings in crop damage and less competition with deer and cattle would make it so they would almost WANT you to come hunt and kill them all.  But NO, they want you to pay for the priviledge.  I checked into over 25 leases yesterday.  All of them said "Children NOT allowed".  WTHO?  You want me to pay and then not bring my kid.  In 20 years you won't have a customer base at all.  We'll figure something out.  After all it's really only one fall/winter that we'll be there.  I'll be out of there in July or so of 2011.

Yeah I know I messed up... BUT I have one kid who really LOVES his JROTC programs.  Public school in Montgomery isn't really an option.  There are better schools and programs in and around San Antonio.  He'll be going into 11th grade this fall.  He needs one more year of JROTC to get automatic promotion if/when he decides to join the military.  I really wanted to go to Montgomery... been there before for 5 years so it was a "familiarity" thing for me.  Oh well, that's part of TX that I haven't really seen much of so I guess it'll be a long "semi-vacation".

I'm not sure what an out of state licence will cost you here, but sounds like it might be cheaper than paying a lease.
Even if you factor in gas, if you have relatives and friends up here you'll probably still come out ahead.
Now we don't have the number of trophy deers here though....

HUMMMMM--my blood boils on several levels ;D ;).
TEXAS, by GOD--is a wonderful place and you can see all types of scenery just doing day trips. You will love the Hill Country and the Gulf Coast. the Piney Woods are within easy reach.
The thing you need too be concerned about is wheater we will accept Sooners so easily  ;).
SA is a very good central location and a good town.
Some good mule deer hunting close--seems like a lot of folks in Texas hunt--I think you will love the change.

One thing you might find, some of the smaller farmers and ranchers are more willing for someone to help with the pigs.  I have a fellow I met who has a "cattle lot" as he calls it of 560 acres, and I hunt for free, and he will feed me if I let him.  Goes out of his way even.  He has a full time job, the cattle are a sideline, and he has little time to eradicate pigs.  Ask around when you get there.  I have a daughter in Corpus, so I've got to meet a few folks inland and you might be surprised...... ;)

I had an uncle that picked San Antonio when he was shipped back state side from Panama I believe. He was a career Air Force. About 28 years I think. He died there but, I have a cousin there whom made a football coach, and teacher there. They still love it.

Texas ain't all bad, I sold my property in Mississippi to buy here, never regreated it a bit.  I came back to Texas from Spain, spent three years in Germany (Bitburg) then transfered to Spain and stayed for five years.

There is more hunting in Texas than most believe, just be yourself and don't act like a smart aleck when you meet a property owner never ask up front about hunting their property, just play it by ear until the conversations goes there,  You may find more hunting than you can handle.

Fishing is great almose everywhere you go in Texas  BIG BASS are common in lot of the lakes and the crappie in most are saddle blanket size, makes for plenty of good eating,  SA is close enough to the coast that you can get in on some great saltwater fishing.

Now... I know that Texas ain't all bad.  I'm only planning on being there about 14 months so won't really have time to "network" and do the good old boy thing.  I know that only about 2% of the land is public.  Everything else seems to be priced out of the "working man's" reach.  I'm sure there are plenty of folks that will still let you hunt if you just find them and talk to them a bit.

     Actually, since I am still an OK resident, as long as I'm on leave I don't have to pay for a license.  Tags and stamps, yes.  Hunting License, no.
Not a big deal either way.  Looks like my kid will be going to school in Lawton this fall on an ROTC scholarhip (not definite, she may go to Stillwater).  And we have access to a decent amount of land in that area that we can hunt for free.  Some of it right down on the Red River.  I'd rather not have to drive 7 hours to go hunting but at least I could hunt when we go up.  I KNOW my wife will want to go up every other weekend or so for at least the first semester.

     Unwad the panties... ;)   Although I wanted to go to Alabama, one of the reasons for the wife and kids to pick Texas is because we haven't lived there before.  We lived in Alabama before.  I can't wait to see the Hill Country up close.  I've only driven through a time or two on the Intersate and there ain't much to see from there.  I really want to go over to the Big Bend area too.  I really need some seafood or at least some shrimp and crawfish...  There ain't much difference between Sooners and Texans... 'bout the same as Michael and Lucifer... and in that order too.   :o ;D .

     I'm REALLY hoping to get in a bass fishing club of some kind.  I don't have a boat but am more than willing to fish "back seat" just for the chance to go.  I belonged to a bass club in Montgomery years ago... that was a blast!  Maybe Momma will let me buy a boat next year for a retirement present to myself.  Ya' don't have to worry about me being a smart aleck to folks.  Growing up in Oklahoma I come well equipped for talking farm, ranch, cattle and hunting.  Got the Wranglers, Carhartts, Justins and hats too.  Drive a Suburban (2), have horses (3), I'll buy an older pickup this fall if I can.  I've found in the past that shiny trucks and nice clothes tend to open doors that you have to pay to go through.  An older truck, faded jeans and a well broken in set of Justin ropers can open gates for free, especially if a kid is involved.  Don't mind a bit of sweat equity to pay for some access either.  It's been a while but I can probably still get around in a John Deere.  I know how to stretch fence.  I can push calves through a squeeze chute too.


Y'all take care,  thanks for all the kind words and advice.  Actually I can't wait to get there...  I haven't been stationed on an AF base since 1999 so it will be interesting to say the least.
