Peep sight
« on: April 14, 2010, 07:07:20 AM »
I am wanting to put a peep sight on my NEF. Looking at the NECG site they have a peep that will fit Weaver bases and one that fits EAW. Will either of these fit the rail on my NEF? Any idea of the height I will need on the front sight?

I would do it in two steps.

Step 1: Order/install either a NECG peep or an XS peep for a Weaver rail (not the EAW type) to fit your rifle properly.

Step 2: After the peep's mounted - AND - with the peep midway in it's elevation adjustment range, measure for a front sight height. (as below)

One, remove the barrel from the action, and insert a fired cartridge case in the chamber.

Two, measure the center-to-center distance between the fired primer and the peep's aperture.

Three, measure the muzzle OD of the barrel, then calculate/divide that distance in two (1/2 OD).

Four, subtract half the muzzle OD (#3 above) from the peep height measurement (#2, above)

You now have the TOTAL front sight hight, including ramp.

I presume that your NEF has no front sight or ramp, since it sounds like it was supplied with only a scope rail - so I would split the total front height between a ramp and a sight blade about 60/40 (ramp taller than the blade), but YMMV here.
If your rifle already has a front sight ramp, then figure it's height from the bottom of the female dovetail to the barrel top into you calculation for the front sight height.

I like to use a Williams Shorty Ramp for most applications, but also like/use the Williams Steamline ramp.

Williams has height charts for the various ramp/blade combos on ther website.

FWIW - A much lower sight height/line-of-sight would be achieved, at half the cost, via removing the scope rail and mounting a $35 Williams WGRS peep sight in two of the existing scope mount holes in the barrel (installing headless plug screws in the other holes).

Thanks Rangr. I never thought about removing the rail... Looks like the way to go. Does the front sight get solderd on or tapped for screws?

The ramp can be installed either way or even both. The screws are removeable should at some point that be your wish while the solder always struck me as a more permanent solution.. I usually attach with screws and a thread locker. The simplest way to measure a peep style sight to the center of the bore is to measure the barrel at the rear sight blade position(side to side). Place the peep in it's lowest position and measurefrom the peep hole to the bottom of the barrel. The difference between these two measurements is the minimum sight height. Add to that 1/2 the diameter of the barrel at that point and you will have the center bore to sighhting hole measurement. Start with a front combo about level with the rear sight and you will be fine. Usually the ramps are offered in fewer heights and I try to put most of the front sight height in the ramp.
