Cord wrap
« on: November 18, 2003, 02:51:14 AM »
Is there any good info out there on how to do a cord wrap, or waxed string wrap?  I need it cheap or free, I had to sell my CZ-452 just to get started with this hobby.  I want to do a neck knife to send to my brother in law in Iraq.  Any help appreciated.  Meanwhile I am going to search some archives to see if I can find anything.  Dan

IronMonkey,
Can't say as I'm into knives but if you're after a cord wrapped handle, I would do it just like the custom fishing rod makers do when mounting line guides, then seal it with rod varnish.  I can talk you through the procedure if you don't know what I'm talking about.  Doesn't take a lot of equipment or time.

Start out with the cord running through the middle of a large book(s) for tension.  Then you lay a bit of the cord across the handle (parallel) at one end and start wrapping the handle at the beginning and start covering over the section of cord (parallel) to the handle.  As you proceed down the handle with the wrapping you will approach the end of the handle. Stop wrapping, keep tension on the handle and cord.

About 6 wraps before the end, you take a short piece of cord about 8 inches long, fold it into a loop and lay across the remaining bare handle end and wrap the cord over this loop, leaving enough of the loop exposed (as in the eye of a needle)to thread the cord through. The ends of the loop will be facing outward, exposed....leave enough of the ends exposed to grab ahold. When you have finished wrapping the cord, place the loose end of the cord through the eye of the loop, pull on the ends of the loop, drawing the cord and loop under the last few wraps.  Trim the excess cord sticking out.  Varnish the cord to seal.

www.therangerdigest.com.   Scroll down on the left until you can click on the Para-cord knife button.  Has a diagarm showing the wrapping method and some text.
