45 70 Shorty
« on: April 14, 2010, 01:46:20 PM »
Anybody cut down a standard 45 70 to a shorty?  Just curious how much velocity penalty there is after lobbing off five inches of a 22" barrel.  Dreaming of a handier handi for pig hunting.  Any photos or range reports are much appreciated.

Thanks

With the bore expansion ratio on the 45-70, wouldn't make a lot of difference.  No hog will ever know the loss in velocity. ;)  DP

I took 4" off my H&R 45-70 barrell to improve balance for my short arms.  With factory 405 lfn it is still an elk rifle out to 100 yds.  With a 3.1 lee dipper full of Traiboss under a 405 solid lead slug it is a plinking rifle at the same distance and kicks about like my .223.  I shot 75 of this load last weekend in one day, no big recoil just a lot of fun.  I am working on a braided latigo sling for it now.

Buffalo Bore, Stickly Big Bore, Strickly Business?  Not sure but I believe their website said it is lever gun ammo, Modern Marlin, so I think that be around 40,000.

Taint real hard to do.  I use four strands of 1/2" latigo in a standard pigtail braid a little loose.  Than I go back and use a copper rivet at every other ladder to hold the braid and give a little stiffeness to the sling.  It's still a little loose but that just lets it go to the shoulder shape of whoever is using it.  I have a Navajo friend here who is a saddlemaker and keeps me supplied.  When I made one for him as payback I worked in some buffalo nickel conchos as decorations.

I have a 45-70 that I cut off to 18 inches.  I load to upper end trap door levels.  I can't tell that the 4 inches I cut off of the barrel did anything but make it easier to handle in a tree stand.  It won't keep a slug inside of any deer that I've shot with it, so it didn't hurt velocity enough to matter.

BB,
I used a 16.5" barreled 45/70 to take down a Bison with one shot using handloaded 405gr. Rem. bullets at 1650FPS. Have no fear, it will do the job for you!

Big Blue,

That's what I wanted to here!  The 405 SP Remingtons are my favority reload bullet for this caliber.  If it will take out a N. American Bison then should be just fine on a 200# feral hog.

Can you post a photo?

thanks

Texas hog goes down right easy from a .357 mag Winchester trapper.  (16" barrell/125 grain Buffalo Bore)  I want to see if my short Handi in 45-70 will skin and clean it all in one shot.  Going with my brother in law later this year.

If I could figure out how to get a photo on here I would do so.  In the last year I have put in over 300 posts and still can't figure photos, half the time i can't even figure out email photos on the net.  it took over 9 months to find the stickys.  You might say I am one of those individuals who remain computer challenged.  I once took a Commodore 64, tied on a rope, then used it for an anchor while fishing for striped bass.  My wife and I were married less than 5 years when I got the message "syntax error" once too often and shot putted an early IBM through the screen on an open window.  We celebrate 30 years together next year.  I really wonder how she has put up with me.  I have a smaller latigo sling on a 4 pound 20 ga breech loader I brought back from junkyard condition.  This is what I throw in the jeep for off road.  Send me an email address and I will try to send an attachment photo, at least that works half the time.  Unfortunately the jpg has to be dumbed down to to 2 meg or less.

blindhari

ps  I read the sticky on photos and I am still lost, what I really need is someone who will walk me through it over the phone.  PM me a phone # and a time to call, I am more than willing to call on my dime any one who will help me.

Wow, Is that all. Propbably somewhat depends on the burning rate of the powder used, too, for reloads.

Getting off the pot on this one.  Just removed scope (1x3x20 weaver) & base, stripped and painted both flat black.  Rear sight is history, making a filler screw for the barrel.  Barrel is marked @ 18 1/4".  Going to read FAQs nine more times.  Will cut it off this weekend and go from there.  Should look a little different when done, the wood furniture is off a pre 87' (skinny barrel) 357/20ga combo.  Straight stock, no pistol grip.  Worst case is the gunsmith will have a couple inches left to fix the barrel and still keep me legal.  Thanks for everyones comment and advice.

BB,
Here's the Bison and skull. I'll see if I can get a photo of the mount up here shortly. It's done, but I haven't gotten it yet. The hole in the center of the skull is from a .357 revolver I used for the coup de grāce.

Barrel is now 18 7/16" long.  Crown reworked but not yet re-blued.  Going to range in AM to see what I have done to my gun!  So far has cost me a $0.88 wallyworld hacksaw blade, a $2.49 grinding stone & about $1.50 worth of emory paper to do this project.  Took about 45 minutes.  If I had went to 18" would be too short for my gun cabinet. ;)

Looks like putting this gun together just in time.  Going to SE Ohio with a friend weekend after next to look for feral hogs.  No photos, digi-camera much smarter than I am.

Should make an excellent hog gun.  Good luck!
