Anybody know about Axtell Rifles
« on: November 18, 2003, 06:36:21 AM »
I'm kinda new to this sport and am shooting a used Browning 1885 in 40-65.  Always wanted a sharps but wanted to wait till I could get a real nice one.  This is a once in a lifetime rifle.   I was all set on a Shiloh in 45-70 until this fella showed up with an Axtell.  It was beautiful.  He juat got it so no info on how it shot.  Anybody know about these rifles?  I heard that thay are real expensive.

Thanks Butler,

Now I'm both droolin and sticker shocked.  Still, I'll probably only live once this time around, still can't remember them other times I was here.  And the cost of a customed Shiloh can near $4000 with MVA sights.

Sooo, anybody know if they shoot as well as they look?  I really like good shooting guns cause I'm usually capable of missin the target all by myself and I don't need the gun to help with that.  What about the recoil reducer they build in?   How are their sights vs others?   Are they going to be in business much longer?  I see from a net search that they are up for sale or is that old news?  Any advice will be very appreciated!!!!

Also should I look at anybody else besides Shiloh and C. Sharps?  You guys have probably been over this question a million times and I apologize for bringing it up again but to me its all new.

pinetree,

The Axtell rifle's are very good and a quality piece. They are reproductions of the mdl 77 Sharps and not the mdl 74 Sharps that Shiloh makes. They kinda look the same but are two different rifles. The mdl 77 Sharps is smaller than the 74 and has a danty feel to it. There has always been a little controversy about the mdl 77, some have always said that this model was not a standared production rifle for Sharps and was in fact a prototype and of the originals very, very few where ever made. I don't know if that is true or not, but as far as I know Axtell is the only Co making mdl 77's. What I do know is that the Axtell rifle is a beatiful rifle and any one should be proud to own it. They are a little pricey though, but what the hell you only live once, Right?

Butler and Gunny,

I want to thank you both for the info.  I looked on the suggested web sights and it seems that Shiloh and C. Sharps are the real powerhouses for sharps.  Meacham looks real nice as well but I better stay with the sharps for now or else I'll get too big a wish list .

I noticed that I probably should have posted this to the other board since this one is really lookin at reloading and such.  I need to pay more attention.  Thanks again!
