Help me decide what scope to top my new Remington 700 SPS Varmint in the 22-250.

Ok I bought a new Remington 700 SPS Varmint in the 22-250 caliber. I will be using this rifle for Groundhogs from ranges of 100 yards to 500 yards plus a little. I want to stay under $400.00 for a scope and still have good glass. I have narrowed my choices down to 4 scopes that I think will meet my needs. I like the Super sniper scopes a lot because you can not hardly find a bad review of them. If I did go with the SS I am not sure what power to go with. It would be either 16 or 20 fixed power. I like the idea of 20 power but feel that at ranges of 100 yards or less I would have to small of a sight picture. Here is a link to the SS scopes.

 I really like the Millet 6x25x56 with the side focus also. The only down side to this scope that I see is the 56 MM objective lens. That seems huge and would have to mount the scope very high. I also can't decide between the fine cross hair and the duplex recticle. I am afraid the fine cross hair may be to thin for me to see. Here is a link to it.

Then I come to the Nikon 6x18x40. I know these are also great scopes. I just wish it came in a mill dot recticle. Here is a link to it.

I am looking for a scope with side focus because addjusting the AO on the front bell can be difucult. The SS have the AO addjustment on the rear of the scope on the eye piece. Dale

Nikon does make that 6-18x40 Buckmaster in a mil dot, but it's a MidwayUSA exclusive.  I got mine there on sale for $299 about a year ago.  I think they're back up to the original price now though.

Ate you going to be dialing in, or holding over on your elevation for different distances?  The SS will probably be the most repeatable/reliable scope in that list if you plan on doing a lot of cranking on your scope.  For some odd reason the 16x SS is noticeably brighter than the 20x (exit pupil) in the SS scopes that I've looked through. 

I would tend to give the Nikon the nod in terms of glass quality.  For around the same price as a SS you can still probably find the 6-18x40mm with mildot reticle.  Might be the way to go  if you are going to hold over for each shot, but the reticle is SFP and not FFP, a handicap for hold-over guys IMO since you will effectively turn a variable power scope into a fixed power, otherwise your POA/POI will be off.

If you have a hard time picking up smaller objects at closer ranges try aiming in with both eyes open (bindon aiming concept), you will be surprised how much faster you can get on target.  You can always close your eye when the time comes to actually shoot.

I am very happy to find out that Midway has the Nikon 6x18x40 in the Mill Dot. I went there yesterday and they have it in stock for $369.99. I am now leaning toward the Nikon. Do any of you know the last time they had this scope on sale? I am hopping they put it on sale again soon. Thanks Dale

They still are $340 I think at www.libertyoptics.com .  Although, you will have to give up the Mildot reticle for a BDC one.

 While not on your list..since this is going to be a varmint set up..take a look at this one..I've looked through the Weavers...very good scopes..
