Today Mike and I drilled the bore ! It involved making an aluminium collar with matching taper tapped on very tight and JB welded it on . We turned the collar down to the proper dia for the steady rest . It worked well .

Tommorow ill true up the astrigills and start polishing, then I will drill the vent .
the muzzle pic looks kinda rough but it was just burrs and is all cleaned up now .

Well, Spuddy, if you really like polish, you're going to love your 1838 Bronze gun after Gary finishes it. He came to the Broomfield Cannon Works today, once more to spend hours on the front end of your cannon. It's looking real nice. Neither Mike nor I could find fault and you know how picky those career inspectors are!!

Today I nailed the muzzle ! those pics you sent are a lifesaver .

Its ready to come out of the steady rest there is an aluminum collar around the bronze which rides in the steady rest . I'll turn it around in the lathe to get at the base ring and cascabel .

Update , Today the gun came off the lathe . In the first pic you can see the aluminum collar that was in the steady rest and the breech collar ring which protected the breech ring from the 3 jaw.

Then sliting it with the mill .

Back into the lathe

more muzzle love !

even being very carfull I scratched the swell with the ring , so more polish on it too .

I was just wondering... Sealant probably wouldn't be a good idea for a shooting gun. For a book self gun it wouldn't hurt. I would think the casting supply house you are dealing with would have something.

The patination chemicals I used on the SAMCC guns offer some protection, but I didn't do mine for that purpose. I wanted to to away with the pimp yellow of the brass and give it a more bronze look. I could have got other colors including verdigris color.

its a lot of different ways to seal the surface against ageing
but personally I like to let it age naturally

the most common ways to seal it is either :
paint it with clear coat
wax it , you could use car wax for example
or put on some artificial patina

the most common is probably to get it the artificial patina of your wish and then wax it
thats whats used on most sculptures

We were surprised to learn today, from Bronze boy, himself, that one of the favorite patina producing methods in the old days was to bury your bronze item in a shallow depression in a dirt floor stable and let the horses do what comes naturally on the buried bronze. We also heard an anecdotal story which confirms this method, but replaces horse urine with moose urine. It's supposed to yield similar results in half the time.

I really doubt if Gary has the patience necessary for this task, so Spuddy, it looks like it's up to you. Here is a cautionary word from your friends in Broomfield, however; when you are in the Maine woods looking to select and then stake out a friendly, compliant Moose, please remember these words: make sure the moose you select does not have Obama's current temperment, that of actively looking for "some ass to kick", because in your case, the ass kicked might be your own!!

drink and sing songs........... there is a moose song out there that I can not repeate in polite company.....

The M1841 is coming along nicely how are you going to polish the trunnions to match the rest?

Also I would like to and sit in camp with you and drink and sing songs .....even in church I'm was but a hummer ...... But it's been too long since a camping trip for me .

I have a chiminia (sp) thing out back I can fire up ....and it sounds like a good idea right now as this is one sweet high plains Colorado evening .

We could sit and reminece about things we didnt do together . I might break out in a course of Johnny Cashes

I saw an episode on Mythbusters once where they were catching dog unine in a park in a most demeaning way. I don't know if that would work too well with moose. I have been on three moose hunts in the past few years, and part of the job is to paw the guts out of the critter. I remember in all three episodes that there was plenty of patina juice, you need to be very careful to keep it in its place so as to not ruin the meat. To use this method of collection does not require a compliant moose, just a room temperature one. I think I am going to go for natural patina. Tracy I have on more than one occasion almost had my --- kicked by a moose, but with good breaks and a bit of providence and alot of fear was able to avoid the beast.

It COULD be quite challanging, depending on whether the fuse is lit or not.
