Well,
Now my head is so big it won't fit throught the door. :o
Thanks for everyone's confidence.
Gary, what scale is the barrel?
I've traded a couple of emails with Spuddy but no decisions have been made.  Making a #1 carriage is very involved no matter what scale it is.  It is extremely hard to estimate hours in a project like this.  I'm sure Gary can testify to that. :-\
If I knew the scale, I could better figure out what size everything would need to be.

Maybe Gary can cast a resin model from his mold for Big Head.... Err Zulu.... this way the irons will work,
also by having a model on hand if Gary makes more of these for other people he can recomend you as carraige
Maker and you won't have to have barrels shipped to you each time just a thought.

Zulu it was very nice of you to take on this project . I didnt make it to any scale .

When I began the project I intended to cast it myself so I estamated how big I could make it and still have a big enough cooling bell . I figures 15 lbs for the barrel and nearly that much for the bell .

Its a bit over 15 inches long BUT scale proly wouldnt do much good anyway as I've never seen the trunions I just made them 'look' good to me .

I can send you exact drawing with trunion spaces length of trunions ,dia.  .

Rocklock,
I didn't take on the project yet.
How long was the original barrel?  If I know this I can scale for wheel size.
I'm still trying to figure out how many hours I could end up with in a #1 carriage.  It could be a lot.

So,
59.3 divided by 15.5 = 3.826
3.826 = 1"
a #1 wheel is 57" diameter
57 divided by 3.826 = 14.9
So, a wheel could be made at 15'"diameter
a #1 trail is 92.1" long
92.1 divided by 3.826 = 24.07"
So a trail could be made at 24" long.
I lay no claim to mathamatics.
Does anyone see any fault in my reasoning?  I think rounding off is okay.

I'm a bit of a number cruncher, and see nothing wrong with yours.  I agree that rounding shouldn't cause a significant difference, unless you try to calculate everything out individually then round each dimension (the rounding will require you to make some slight adjustments throughout the design, which is probably easier to do as you fit each part together).

Gary,

The text on Victor's Morko will probably look better after you do some cleanup of the gonne (I think you may have overcompensated for the faintness in mine).

Did the linstock head turn out close enough to a finished-out-of-cast part as you hoped?  Did you do a buttcap for it as well?  I'd like to see some more of it.

I suppose it would be good for proper Burn's Night Supper when you should actually stab the Haggis, and you will get a bit of smoke from the slowmatch.

It turned out good Gary!  It looks like something that just about anyone with a few files and some sandpaper could finish into a really nice looking piece in an afternoon, even quicker with a grinder/buffer.  What's the M at the top of your mark indicate?  I don't remember seeing it before.

Was Vic going to do the drilling and finishing on his?  It doesn't seem like it's been out of the oven long enough to be getting shipped out already, though I'm sure it goes quicker once you've done one.

Have you done Dan's Morko yet?  I'd love to see a side by side shot with the original, if he can pursuade the museum curator to let him to that!

I put my dads first initial on top Martin . By lucky coincident it is aslo my middle initial is M too for ...yep Martin .

But my normal mark wont have it .

It is something that just about anyone with a few simple tools could finish .

Yes I do have Dans Morko , and I guess i'm spilling the beans but his is next to do !

So Gary is a ratermite?  He must be, since it was in his Photobucket account!

Interesting drawing.  Is it full scale?  About 1" bore?

I am a "Basher" where the hell you bean  ;D

Criky , I dont think we even have a position of 'ratermite , BUT if the moneys right .........I could be interested  :D .

It is shown full 1/6th scale ,1 inch bore .

No position called Ratermite , but that might be a good name for the howie . I based it on Ruskie gun arcitecture .

"Ratermite" 6 inch varriety .

Hey Tom how would the Dragon spell this in commie ?  ;D . I can say that ,maybe .....As I've talked to the  Dragon .... she was a butterfly to me , and she has one sweet accent !  Like the old Bond movies ladies .

I received my 1838 from Rocklock today.  It looks amazing in pictures.  It is unbelieveable in my hands.  I need to decide on a carriage for it.  I remember the first time I came across this board.  I was impressed by the knowledge contained here. I have gotten to get to know a few of you and never would have believed how generous you would become with your information and abilities.  Thanks for that.  Thank you Gary for a great cannon.
Regards,
Tim
