Today I worked on the carriage for my bronze howitzer . It looks abit clunky now but I will trim her up .

There will be longer trails than shown . Those are frame pieces that will have trails / horse hook up pieces added

This was last night just mocked up .

Here is the same wood fitted together .

This is a 1/3 scale howitzer ,it is a 24 pder and would weigh @270 lbs . I am undecided as far as wheel dia.

I favor 18" , but Mike gave me some bad looks this afternoon ....?

It's a galloper and will come off the carriage for dedicated mortar use .

Muller says the wheel diameter for traveling carriages was 58 inches. That is a full scale24 PDR, 22 PDR, 6 PDR and 3 PDR

I been getting some flak from over seas and broomfield ...... it seems some folks would like to see it as a Mons Meg thingamarroo with 10 inch wheels ......

So roughly 20" wheels, then?

It's taking a little more shape! These things take time, but it looks like it will be nice when it's done!

its for a 3 pounder , but still you might be able to get some ideas or proportions from it

This should be interesting , can't wait to see what replies you get Gary. As you want to have flexibility of design , not setting Country.....Decade.....etc. should bring you a few ideas. Can't see the difficulty in making correctly proportioned wheels though........after all , you got access to proly the the best shop in the State......and not 1...........but 2........top quality advisors. Then you got a damn Swede , sending you , free gratis , period drawings...........not to mention the Un-named foreign alien pitching in an opinion.....................could it be you are running scared of working to small scale?.......after all .........what could be so difficult in making small....PROPORTIONAL wheels.
You have mastered the art of barrel bashing , created a beautifull barrel........a couple of days to rattle out a pair of rinky dink wheels ? ..............................what a waste to hide that honey of a barrel behind humungous great wheels. In my very humble opinion.

I did open the link,(many many time over the past few years, they are on our link list) and those wheels aren't cannon wheels, wrong spoke count and lighter built. At the top of their page is a link for their cannon wheels and if you click on that you will see their smallest cannon wheel is 24 inches. I'm suggesting you drop them an email and see if they will make a 20 inch cannon wheel.

I just opened a big box that showed up at my door . It had three jugs of Fort Fairfield Pure Maple Syrup inside ! I had to try it ......

......my goodness ...I dont think I ever had that B4 .

It is warm so it's thin now ......

Three bottles ,hummm , well , I do owe Mike and Tracy . It would be the thing to do alright ,no doubt about that .

I never actually asked them if they like it ? Hummmm ...I'm not sure they do .

You are welcome.

You could try to distill or brew it I couldn't guess what the result might be. It is kind of in a distilled form now. It normally takes 40 gallons of maple sap to make one gallon of syrup. This year the sap ran early and it took 50 gallons to make one. You slowly boil the sap to remove the water in the form of steam. You float a hydrometer in the syrup to determine if it has boiled enough. It is a great way to usher in spring, you would love it. If you are ever in Maine in the spring you are welcome to come sit and help tend the fire.

The best year when I was sugaring, it was 21:1 and you could walk on the sap. That must have been 20-25 years ago? The smell of the sugared steam in the sap house, your fist around a beer and eggs bobbing in the pan....it doesn't get much better than that! To stay awake; sap coffee hits the spot.

Im just off the phone now after I had an over one hour long conversation with a lovely woman there ,
it will be really fun to make this trip , the family reunion is on its way

Abit more work today . Mostly bandsaw work on some of the ends of timbers.

These wheel are not going to stay ...they block the view . Plus every time I see them I think of that "Come and take it gun" in Texas .

Too bad your Morko's older brother can't be there for it too - I'd have to take time off and get a plane ticket to bring him there, and that just can't happen that soon. It'll be nice to see pictures of the patriarch of the family meeting one of his heirs! Be sure to let him know that he has others as well, who just couldn't make the trip, but are really happy that at least a representative of the current generation could visit for them.

For a second I thought your adjustment screw was in the wrong location, but then I realized it's for the clamp.

Nice planning to have the same diameter trunnions! I haven't seen many garriages with so many interlocking pieces of wood. Is this your own design, or is it something you adapted from one of Dan's pictures? Is it going to be designed so it can easily be disassembled to fit into your Spyder?

This is Morko #5 and is 62 cal. ! I put a 1/2 " chamber for saftey . It should hold about 50 grians .

I dont have a clue if the origanal has a chamber ? The handgones of old often had chambers .

I will conduct tests on sheet metal to duplicate armor .

Nice! I'm happy with the .50 on mine - no chamber to deal with, and it matches other guns I have, so it keeps me from adding yet another bore size to my collection (.36, .45, .50, .58, 1.5...). He's looking good! Make sure you square up the butt end, so the shaft will fit well. I had to do a bit of that on #1.
