Here is a link to one of those rigs used for logging.  http://www.corbisimages.com/Enlargement/FS003163.html

Can't pull the picture over because it's copyrighted.

So Gary are you going to invest in one of those miniature ponies and train it to tow your
howitzer? ;D

Use a Smart Car or a riding mower for towing.
Are yu sure a smartcar would have enough horsepower? Th mower yea, but I'm not sure about those smartcars.

I was wondering the same thing.  Those smartcars are good for about 1 thing - fitting into a junkyard crusher.  Go for the tractor or lawnmower, and save the $12k you'd spend on a base model smartcar.  Or you could hitch up your dog!

Yep that's it alright I bought some of those mini ponies  ::) . They were next to the mini giraffes like in the comercial .

I'm not sure how Smart cars fit into crushers , But I have been to Casper Wy. and back in one . If you can take a Cessena 172 cross country you can do a Smart car . If not ......well  then you are kinda big or just spoiled . They still make boats !

Civil War era artillery sling cart used for transporting large barrels.

Similar rigs were also commonly used for heavy logging but that’s the first set I’ve ever seen that had staggered spokes. I couldn’t find a reference to the one in this photo in the Union Ordnance Manual, and I wonder if this might be a logging skid (called “Big Wheels” in logging speak, for obvious reasons). It was pretty common for them to be that tall, sometimes more than ten feet high.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

My M1838 is now complete.  Rocklock I cast the barrel, and Dominick made the carriage.  I think that they did and outstanding job.  I think it is cool to have something made by each of them in one package.

I wanted to show you guys a picture of the original cannon that inspired Gary to make me a 1/4 scale bronze 1838.  Some of you have seen this before, but I wanted you to see a picture of the big one and the small one together.  Dom made the carriage for it.  I am very pleased with how it all turned out.  I also have attempted to attach a video or at least of link of it firing a blank for the first time as a complete cannon.

Well, Gary...if you're going to reject it because of the pits that Dan "never" told you about, all I can say is...you still have my address? ;)

It's looking really good.  The pits won;t show nearly as bad once you get the rest of it polished up, and if they do, see above! ;D

You can always TIG weld them with silicon bronze filler rod and clean up again.

Yes I could have it welded , but it wouldnt be worth the time to me . I will just turn a better wax next time .
My goal is to not have any (or not too much) cleaning or polishing no parting lines either ;) .

Wow, that's really looking good Gary.  You have to call me out of my basement packaging cave when you achieve a milestone such as you have.  I like that design a lot; someday I will build a carronade, because I've always like that type of cannon.

Good job; you should show these guys what your new wax looks like, maybe next to a typical candle.  Also tell us what industry uses it for.

The wax is a machine turnable wax it comes in cylinders or blocks . I will show pics once I start turning it .

I got abit more done on the underlug howie yesterday and today .
In this photo the pilot hole is being drilled . It is the deepest hole as it is also the chamber .

This picture is of the 3/4" final bore size drill . .....maybe 7/8" we'll see .

You can see the aluminum collar I turned yesterday to keep the piece from spinning or being galled .

More tomorrow

Although it didn't happen yesterday, I thought maybe a few of you fellows might be interested in a unique task that I challenged Gary Lorenz to accomplish last summer.  A few weeks after he finished his beautiful hand gonne by adding a unique stock or tiller, I put this challenge to him.

"With your Morko, go forth and slay 'seven at one blow', just like the saying written on the tailor's belt in the Fairy Tale by the brothers Grimm.  Displaying scouting and hunting skills he probably learned on Paris Island so many years ago, he went out into the quiet end of his backyard and after 10 minutes of stalking, he had located his quarry, and with the gonne and his slow match in hand, he struck them with one blow of fire and smoke, meeting the challenge, and showed me the bodies to prove the deed was done.  The unpublished photo I took of Gary accomplishing this 'Blood Challenge' is posted below.

Was this mission declassified ? I must have missed the memo  :o

It reportedly sshow me shooting the flies ..... I can neither confirm or deny this info .

The hunting may not be as good this summer as 3 of our 4 bait makers have ...moved on :'(  ...since then .

Beautiful gun!  It appears to be breech heavy, which should be ideal for that design.  Have you worked on carriage plans for it yet?

Gary, Very nice work. If your not careful your barrel production can get ahead of your carriage production, since carriages usually take more time to build. I have the other problem, more carriages (metal) than barrels.

Thanks for the complements guys . My carriage production is s l o w . Even slower than my barrel making .

I'm thinking of something near medevil like this .

Yes it is breech heavy .
