I am thinking strongly about getting the Beretta 96.  I don't know which specific model to get but i like the feel of the weapon in my hand.  Can anyone give me any insight into the .40 recoil and/or tell me about the reliability of the pistol?

I can tell you that the pistol is as reliable as they come. I have a 96 D double action only and I love it. I was leary of the DAO at first, but as I have gotten used to the long trigger pull I find that I like it. You may prefer another model. In fact, I'm not sure if they still make the 96D. But the reliability is the same as other models. Recoil is not that bad. It is about the same as a .45 in a full size 1911. It has some kick, but is quite managable.

I have a Beretta 96, and enjoy it.  Mine is a DA/SA and shoots very well.  Never had any problems with it.  It's my favorite 40 caliber pistol to shoot, and I prefer it over my Glock in 40 S&W.  I've had it for about 7 years now, so it's seen a lot of rounds down range, no malfunctions, ever.  I wouldn't hesitate to purchase another.

I chose the Brigadier Stainless Inox which come with the wrap around finger groove grips. Feel great in the hand. I have short fat fingers and don't have any problems. The brigadier has a heavier slide than the standard 96. I figured that I would be shooting the heck out of it since I reload my own stuff. I have probably shot 1500 rnds through it so far. Barely broke in. It will shoot as quickly as you can cycle the trigger. Mine ejects the brass several yards over my right shoulder. A very beautiful firearm. The recoil is not bad and you can get back on your target quickly. The only Mod I have made is I have had night sights installed. All my buddies love shooting it as well.

I carry a 96D Brigadier DAO daily.  The long heavy DAO trigger takes some breaking in, but once done, while still long, it lightens up and is very smooth.

Recoil is managable, even with the hotter defense loadings.  With plinking ammo, it is really pleasant.

In over 3000 rounds, I have had one stovepipe, and I induced it intentionally by limpwristing.  No other malfunctions.  I should mention that it collects a lot of grit in the field, but that doesn't seem to bother it much.  The magazines are prone to rust on humid days, though.

I shoot tighter groups with a Glock, but I am more comfortable shooting the Beretta.

I trust my life to this pistol, and I wish I could buy it from my agency when we supposedly transition to USP's next year.

Your mileage may vary.  Good luck.

I have Brigadier Elite 96 G.  I love this gun has long pull but shoots great.  Never had any problems with gun.  Shooting both reloads and factory.  I wouldn't even try quessing number of rounds.  Only complaint would like hire cap mags.
