336 ER in 356 Win Reloading question
« on: April 20, 2010, 05:18:38 AM »
I finally got a 336 ER this weekend. So of course I have spent every waking moment reading up on reloading for it since that time. I have read in two different places that they do not recommend round nose bullets for this caliber just flat nose. I am well aware of the dangers of spire point bullets in a tube magazine but have never heard of a problem with round nose bullets. Is this accurate? Is is specific to this caliber? I want to load it with the 200 grn 35 cal hornady with the round nose but do not need a kaboom in my future. Any advice is appreciated.

Folks have been reloading the 35 Rem with RN's for a long time. Granted the 356 generates more recoil. I think you should be fine.
However there is an alternative  using  Speer's 180 or 220 gr. FN's which are ballistically superior.

   Hdy    200 gr   BC .195
   Speer  180 gr  BC .245
   Speer  220 gr  BC .316

It's probably impossible to cause a chain fire in a tubular magazine.  Extensive testing has never accomplished it.  I wouldn't worry about it.

you need to keep in mind that the 356 has about twice the recoil of a 3030 and alot more chance of something bad happening because of pointy bullets.

Round nosed bullets aren't pointy.  Lead doesn't make a very good firing pin.

I guess it wouldn't be too hard to test the concept on a primed case with no powder.   My money says it won't go kaboom.  I have a 356 also.

Take a look at a box of 200gr Remington SP Coreloks for the 35's. (Not the PSP - they are pointed) The SP's are round nose and not restricted to any particular 35 caliber rifle. I've shot several hundred through my 356W and they really get down range in a hurry. No worries. The Hornady round nose has also been written up in the rags with this cartridge. I've used the 250gr Hornady RN and like it very much, though it has a rather small round nose - it has never given a problem of any kind. Most of these concerns have evaporated for me as I usually hunt with cast bullets any more with my BB94 356W. Your Marlin should like 'em all just fine. Just make double sure they say RN or FN or FP and not Spitzer or Spire Point or FMJ. The one that might really cause confusion is the Spire Point. That abbreviation become SP just like the Soft Point is SP. You have to make sure it's a RNSP and not a PSP or a Spire Point - they will ruin your whole day.
