For those coming to  CBCCII we will shoot a full SAMCC both the small bore and large bore and those can be/will be you entries for the postal shoot.

We will shoot this match in the SAMCC format.  Load on command and Shoot master will walk the line to fire the guns. (Shoot master won't physically fire the gun as the do in  Durban, but will call fire and the gun crew will fire the gun).

I am already thinking about 2013 CBCCIII.  I'm thinking maybe at the CBCCII AGM discussing a specific theme to give folks time too work on a specific gun.   Say 1 inch guns or  Bowling ball mortars.

This year we are going to have a hole in one contest for golf ball mortars.  There will be a $50 pot.  entry will be $5 for five balls. The $5 will be added to the pot.  First hole in one splits the pot with the club range fund.  No hole in one the club gets the pot.

One thing you need to know is that you will only be able to drive your vehicle to the firing line to unload and load.  After unloading you will be required to park your vehicle in the parking lot behind the range.

The weekend of our shoot will also be the Cut Bank Airport Fun Weekend.  Here is a link. http://www.cutbankairport.org/montana-fun-weekend so there will be other entertainment.

When you come to Cut  Bank here are some of the sights to see.

Plains Indian Museum http://www.blackfeetcountry.com/museum.html

North American Indian Days http://www.blackfeetcountry.com/naid.html

Sweet Grass Hills http://www.montanapictures.net/sweetgrass-hills-montana.htm

Remington Carriage Museum http://www.remingtoncarriagemuseum.com/

Charlie Russell Museum http://www.cmrussell.org
Glacier National Park  http://www.nps.gov/glac

You will also be about 30 miles south of the US-Canada border. So for information on crossing the border check here. http://www.getyouhome.gov/

You will also need to know that Canada has restrictive firearms law and they are very serious about them. Try to take a handgun or hangun ammo into Canada and you may be arrested. At least you will be fined and loose your gun.  And don't think you can hide it from them, they train their dogs to find guns.

The other thing that can get you in trouble going into Canada is if you have ever been arrested. More than one traveler has been turned back for a DUI arrest years ago.

Seacoast Artillery Company is providing the Prize to the  'One Shot, Closest to the Stake Contest'  at this years Cut Bank Cannon Convention II in Montana.   We thought and thought of what would constitute an appropriate and worthy prize.  Finally, we came up with a " Bundle of Books".  After winning this unknown yardage contest where the distance to the stake will be measured from wherever the projectile stopped, you can start answering your own questions and maybe a few for some newbies, as well.  The bundle of five new books is composed of our very favorite of all time, the excellent overall archive of all artillery used in the Civil War, Warren Ripley's, Artillery and Ammunition of the Civil War , No.  1 and four other essentials, most of which we use at least weekly.

No.  2    Round Shot and Rammers by Harold Peterson

No.  3     Field Artillery Weapons of the Civil War by Hazlett

No.  4    Artillery Through the Ages by the National Park Service

No.  5     Arms and Equipment of the Civil War by Coggins

So, head to Montana and shoot any mortar to compete in this contest.  If you win it, you just might learn something new!

We do every day,

Mike and Tracy
Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

I just got off the phone with Tracy discussing this.  Here's how it will work.

I will close the firing line and have one of the club officers or some other non participating dignitary take an aiming stake down range, any distant they want, any where they want down range and set it in place.  After the stake is placed shooters will be given the command to load and aim.  When every one is loaded and aimed in, the command to fire will be given and the shooters will fire their mortars sequentially from  one end of the line to the other.

Every one with a mortar, any mortar, will be allowed one shot.

After everyone has  shot, we will go down and measure how far each shot lays from the stake.  The projectile that is the closet to the stake wins the books.

Everyone will have to mark their projectile so it can be identified.

One mortar and one shot per shooter.

Thank You Seacoast Artillery!!!

Now If M&T were to show up with the Monster I don't think the stake would survive
if it landed close....... Sounds like a great event someday I hope to make one.

I am going add another element to this.

I am going set up a mortar line and everyone will have to place their mortar on the mortar line first  and then I will send the dignitary forward to set the aiming stake.

When the dignitary comes back from down range.  Then the command to load and aim will be given.

This will make it so the gunner can not select a special mortar for the range.  Shooters will have load what ever mortar they have placed on the firing line. Ho boy this is gonna be fun!!!! ;D

The normally wordy one, me, will interpret this latest addition from DD.   If you come really prepared with two, three, or four different mortars, you will be asked to place just the one which you will fire for score somewhere on the Mortar (Firing) Line BEFORE the dignitary has placed the aiming stake.  This addition was done in the interest of fairness to all competitors involved in this contest.

Are we going to set some minimum and maximum range so we aren't trying to put the shot to some absurdly short or long range?

Yes, the minimum range will be the firing line the maximum will be the impact zone about 250 yards away.  It will be up to the dignitary to decide.  It really doesn't matter just load your mortar with the appropriate charge for the range.

Try not to think about it, just show up ready to shoot! About the only mortar that will be at a disadvantage will be a nano mortar and that is because we would probably not be able to find the shot.

We have discussed and analyzed that maximum range for one mortar might be minimum range for another, and and, and and I have not idea what I was typing.

Currently my Zinc  Moulds are lodged with Rotometals.  Does any one want to cast zinc popcan and golf ball size round balls while  the are here.

Same system as before  home made melting pot sitting on the ground.

That crawling on the ground bit really used up the energy.  Maybe I will bring a casting table as we discussed a while back instead of the Adirondack chairs.
