How did your Parrot do against Fort Pallet?  Your gun was the one I expected to take the fort down if the bowling ball didn't crush it.

Notice how Fort Pallet takes direct and indirect hits  from the bowling ball mortar and the balls roll of like water of a ducks back!!!!

     I agree, Double D.; Gary has the ability to hit point targets, but I believe his front sight gets lost in all that lumber.  I found two exit holes below the half way point that were big enough to be his, but with all the splintering it's hard to say for sure.

     When it comes to taking the head off a bowling pin, watch out!  He's a master.  I believe I saw him lick his thumb and wipe a little spittle on the right side of his front sight just before shooting his golf ball Parrott gun.  When I asked him why he did that, I think I remember him saying, "Just a little tip I picked up from that movie about Army Sgt. Alvin York in WWI.  When shooting flying geese with a rifle, he would always do that to reduce the glare on the front sight. Where do you think I got the idea of taking a pin out of the back row?  Again, Sgt. York.  He would pick off the last goose in a flight and then the next, etc.  That way the ones in the front didn't realize what was happening!"      This is definite proof that Marines can learn a few things about shooting from us Army guys.   

     Thank you for posting that newspaper article about the shoot, Double D.  Just one thing I can't figure out.  Who is that fat guy on the left in the photo; I don't remember seeing him there.  George, after going through 4 or 5 pallet slats on edge, those Brooke bolts were allowed to tumble.  Thanks for the pics.

I recovered a brooks slug today as well as a red/black steelie golf ball.  Both were laying on the open ground right under where the water jugs were shot.

DD ,what you have discovered at the water bottles is a miss and a hit . My Fox Balls are black and red . Was it still wet ?

BTW the parrot just shot though with no real effect ,unless a Palite defending the fort was in the way .

     MikeR C of Kalispell, MT was definitely the winner and he was also a really nice guy and showed that by giving everyone some instruction in his throwing technique.  The bale of peatmoss lost, bigtime!  It looked like it went ten rounds with a Honey Badger and nothing but nothing bests a Honey Badger; 16 million views on Youtube can't be wrong.

Yes spear throwing...it was a promotional event for the 2012 Victorian Rifleman Provincial shoot to be  held next year in Cut Bank.  We will have a Rorkes drift event. Victorian Rifleman Provincial Shoot

I am sort of interested in your rifle match but it would be nice to include a pistol match also for those of us who have period Adams, Trantor or Webly revolvers I have a near mint Adams in 38 long Colt that need some exercise......

But we will shoot on same range we shot the cannon shoot on.

Count me in , I've always liked spears ,too many Bamba the Jungle Boy TV shows as a kid .
 
I've made several Viking type lances . I came home from Cutbank with the holy grail of my spear collection , Douglas gifted me a very nice Zulu Killing spear from Africa !
 
Yep he did ! Thank You agian DD!  It is very slim sort of spear not too long but ...... a wickedly purpose built thing ,from the 20s I'm told . It has a long iron shaft with a forged twist (for doing bad things to your target) and a delicate leaf shaped blade . The shaft is wraped in copper wire where the iron shaft enters the wood .

Gary you are earning that spear...it is a stabbing spear and not a throwing spear. In fact it is a cattle killing spear.  The twist in the shaft is so that the blade rotates as it passes between the rib of the cattle being slaughtered. I can assure you that type of spear was not left home when it was time to go raid the neighbors for a cattle and women.   Even Shaka Zulu's famous iklwa had a peace time use, it was used for digging roots. Shaka adapted it and renamed it for the sound it made when it was pulled from belly of your enemy. 

The lack of plastic coating on the wire dates it to pre 1930.  Bare copper wire was sold as trade goods.

Yes it is a type of assegai...I am not at home until Thursday so I can't tell you speciifically which assegai it is.  It is not iKlwa.

I found an old post I made on Ethnographic weapons that describes what the spears is and how it was used.

inGicawe: Assegai with short slender blade as long as a finger. With a long often twisted and otherwise ornamented shank. Used for hunting (both throwing and stabbing) and slaughtering. Callaway, Nursery Tales.
