GM repays loan!
« on: April 22, 2010, 05:01:20 AM »
Is it possible that those heinous bailouts actually worked!!!!!

http://www.gm.com/?seo=msn_|_2010_GM_Loan_Repayment_|_Loan_Repayment_|_GM_Repay_Loan_|_gm_repays_loans

Chief executive officer Ed Whitacre announced the repayments Wednesday at GM's Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kan., and also said the company was investing a total of $257 million in that factory and the Detroit-Hamtramck plant. The payments were made Tuesday.

The White House pointed to GM's repayment of the loan and Chrysler Group L.L.C.'s posting of an operating profit in the first quarter of 2010 as concrete signs that the bailout of the U.S. automakers was working.

In a report, the Obama administration noted the U.S. auto industry lost 400,000 jobs in 2008, and analysts estimated an additional 1 million would have been lost had GM and Chrysler been liquidated. In the last nine months, the White House said automakers had added 45,000 jobs, the industry's strongest job growth in nearly a decade.

GM received $52 billion from the U.S. government and $9.5 billion from the Canadian and Ontario governments as it went through bankruptcy protection last year. At first, the entire amount of U.S. aid was considered a loan as the government tried to keep GM from going under and pulling the fragile economy into a depression.

During bankruptcy, the U.S. government reduced the loan portion to $6.7 billion and converted the rest into company stock, while the Canadian government held $1.4 billion in loans. Those loans were repaid Tuesday, five years ahead of schedule.

The stock they hold means the U.S. government owns 61 percent of GM, and Canada owns roughly 12 percent.

Oh Crusty;
When will you finally get to the point to finally admit that the socialist/Marxist obama administration was one big, fat, stupid mistake by a majority of American voters ?  ;) :D ;D
Some call it prestidigitation, others call it "smoke & mirrors".

GM is in debt to the govt for about 50 billions and they pay back 8 billions...how did they do that ?

They did it by getting another govt loan and paying the old loan with the new one..  http://blogs.ajc.com/jamie-dupree-washington-insider/2010/04/21/gm-money-game/?cxntfid=blogs_jamie_dupree_washington_insider

Govt uses our money to buy govt motors..then GIVES much of it to the union...how do you spell STEALING ?

Noe the govt accuses Toyota, world's largest car manufacturer of all kinds of wrongs. Recalls by others including GM...such as have been all but ignored previously by the govt, are suddenly subject of humongus cries and govt hearings.
Since the govt owns Toyota's competition, is this not a conflict of interest ? Should not congress recuse itself ?

I know that my way of thinking will cause problems BUT
how do you lay off 400,000 then hire 45,000 and call that growth? ???

Ah come on guys, the news says their debt has been paid.  Who are we to question that?  It matters not that they are playing with OUR money!

they didn't lose money anyway. they, ON PAPER, showed a loss for the time frame required by the tax laws.

they took a ton of money, handed some of it back, and then wrote their taxes up at a loss.

this is what makes the housing and financial markets stay in trouble.

They will not be out of the woods until they buy back the 61% stock the government owns and sell it to investors and get the government out of their business.  My company is not buying GM or Chrysler products this year.  We are only buying Ford trucks converting them to natural gas, and Honda natural gas powered cars made in Alabama.

Hey, loan me sixty some billion bucks and I'll pay back nine billion the next day and call us square.  I'll do that as often as I can find some stupid sucker government to play the game.  I can't wait until a bunch of other big industries line up for the same deal.

That`s what I like to hear!!
With all of the natural gas we are producing, all automobiles should be running on natural gas!! And GM as you mentioned is still a long ways from being out of the woods. IMHO they should have never been bailed out, let them sink or swim!

Here is a simple breakdown of the disbursement: (cut and paste from an economist)

GM received $49.5 billion — roughly $14.5 billion pre-bankruptcy and roughly $35 Billion during bankruptcy. Of the $35 billion, 16.4 billion was placed in an escrow account. $2.8 billion in the escrow account was used to resolve Delphi’s bankruptcy thus reducing the escrow account to $13.7 billion.

In exchange for the disbursement of $49.5 billion, the government received 60% stake in the new GM. $7.1 billion in interest bearing debt ($0.4 billion was paid back in July 2009).$2.1 billion of preferred stock. Thus, the through TARP, the government gave GM $49.5 billion in exchange for a mixture of debt and equity. The government can therefore recoup its investment by selling shares of GM stock after the release of the IPO and through the repayment of the interest bearing bonds.

What GM has done is use the TARP money that was placed in escrow by the Treasury Department to repay the remaining interest bearing debt of $6.7 billion. Given that this money was not paid for with profits earned by the company it is effectively a debt-for-equity swap not a loan repayment. In other words, the Treasury approved the repayment of the loan with the escrow funds and the government therefore hopes to recover the remainder of their investment by selling common stock after GM’s initial public offering that is intended to take place this year

So In a nutshell here's what they did  -

GM didn't pay back anything. If they used money from an escrow account, they essentially moved money around from one place to another, but their total amount owing is still the same. For instance, if I have a line of credit and a separate bank loan, even if I draw on my credit line to pay off my bank loan, I haven't gained anything other than maybe saving on interest charges if there is a difference between the two loans. It's like using your mastercard to pay off your visa. If you keep doing this, you actually will go further into debt as you aren't generating any real money to pay down your total debt.

Can anyone find the taxpayers pea under the nutshells. ?
Maybe we can witness another 3 card monte again later this year when another company states they paid off their loan.

What a Joke,!!! is anybody really surprised???.

Madoff operated under Bush JR without restraint or oversight..SEC even pulled from the case.

Does anybody have the real story on GM paying off loans in total sevral years in advance...? If they did that's good news for them, taxpayers, workers, and the defense industry.

TM, you mentioned that Maddoff started his dealing when Bush jr. was in office. Wasn't there a couple go betweens from the Democratic party,(Barney Frank is one), that kept a lid on this untill it was to late? Of corse it is the easy way out to blame Bush. Far from perfect, but he was a heck of alot better than what's in there now!gypsyman

GM got a visit from the credit fairy.  ;D

Actually what they got was the combined efforts of the government backed media to report good news that government motors did a "good" thing. (The same media that gave so much attention to Toyota and Honda's recall issue, while GM's own recall issues were conveniently non-reportable.) That it was in essence a debt consolidation that neither reduced the debt nor benefited the people is irrelevant. But the people will rejoice and proclaim that Obama is good, Obama is right.
