$146 For a Trigger Job
« on: April 23, 2010, 11:03:39 AM »
Does that seem kind of steep, or is it just me ?
My 1911 slam fired on me a few times, so I took it in to a gunsmith.
The owner of the gun store swears by the gunsmith, 40 years experience on 1911's, the best there is, laa-de-dah.
Maybe the gunsmith is all of that, and more.
I haven't picked it up yet, so I can't comment on the quality of the work.
But does 146 dollars seem kind of way out there, just for a trigger job.

not if its a quality job. Guys stick there nose up in the air about dumping 100-200 on an action job but if you ever watched a real professional do one on any gun be it a 1911 or a single action youd see that it involves hours of tedious work. Personaly id be more skeptical if he told you 50 bucks.

the best money you can spend on a 1911  is a good trigger job and a properly fitted barrel bushing. 146 bucks might seem like a lot of dough for a trigger job but it's worth it for a top notch trigger......

Did you own the gun before?  Did he have to un-do or replace trigger parts? For a good trigger job, it's reasonable.

i am not a gunsmith but if my 1911 starts slam firing the first thing i'd do is replace the firing pin spring

That was my first thought also.  A very distant thought #3 would be to increase the tension of the left "finger" on the sear spring slightly.  But that would be only after replacing the firing pin spring and then examining the firing pin and the firing pin hole in the breech face to be sure that the F.P. wasn't sticking or jamming there.

Took it out yesterday, and I was very pleased with with work he did.
I will just consider it 146 dollars well spent.

Couldn't say until you know if and what parts were replaced . If you get the gun back in good order with a great trigger then its a deal - right ? In my trade that's about one hours worth of work .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
