IS THE T/C PISTOL FOR ME
« on: November 19, 2003, 04:35:36 AM »
I AM PRIMARLY A BOWHUNTER,I SET MY STANDS UP TO GET CLOSE BOWSHOTS.THE AREA I HUNT HAS ALOT OF FEILDS.WHEN I AM HUNTING THE BIGGER BUCKS ON MY PROPERTIES I SOMETIMES CARRY MY RIFLE ALONG WITH MY BOW IN CASE BIG BOY STEPS OUT 150-200YDS IN THE FEILD.CARRYING.I WAS WONDERING HOW EASY DO YOU THINK IT WOULD BE TO CARRY ONE T/C PISTOLS VS A LONG RIFLE.WHICH CALIBER AND BARREL LENGTH WOULD TAKE A WHITETAIL AT 200 YDS AND IN?I THINK THIS GUN WOULD WORK,I JUST DON'T KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT THEM.

Interesting question?

I figure a TC with a 12" barrell is alot easier to tuck away in your pack or somewhere on stand than say a rifle.  Much smaller, but not as easy to shoot off hand at longer distances like you mentioned.

The next question will be do you have a rest to shoot from? If so, the limiting factor here still will most likely be your ability to shoot a pistol at that range. There are multiple pistol rounds out there that can do the job if you can do yours. In short, shooting a pistol at 200 is a different story than shooting a rifle. But you most likely can get there with some practice. And it's fun!  :D And yeah, it would be easier to carry in in a holster or in your pack IMHO.

I would use a rest..I was planning on getting some sort of shooting stick to prop on.Would the 12" barrel be as effective as a 15" barrel?I would like a gun that is easy to pack and easy to get to if I would need to use it.I shoot a .30/06 rifle..I think this would be to much recoil in the pistol dept.

yes it's for you, but only if you put in the effort to become proficient with it ,just as you have to do when shooting a bow.
in a contender, 7-30waters, 30-30, 35rem, and my favorite the 30-30ackley improved.
in a encore, .243, .308, and my favorite the 7mm-08. these are just a few choices that come to mind. it all depends on if you are handloading, or shooting factory ammo. :D

I was thinking of the 7mm-08...I don't think recoil would be to terrible. The .308 is enticing because of the range of ammo available.Would a 12" or 15" barrel be better?I would plan on scoping the gun out also.

i prefer the 15" barrels in encore, and 14" in contender. i have a 15" 7-08 encore, and like it very much. i only see the 15" barrels as a plus. you get the extra performance from it for those powerful calibers. some may complain with portability. i use a sling, and have no problem packing a few extra inches of barrel. i use my sling as a shooting aid for offhand shots, home made cross shooting stix when i can, and, or home made bags, filled with light weight filler. i always try to rest the gun on something available. the sling over your left elbow, left hand applying pressure to the forearm is really steady for times you get caught without a rest.
if you're bothered by the extra barrel length, you could have it cut down and recrowned later. :idea3:

Is there anything I can do to the gun to improve accuracy other than practice. ( trigger jobs, etc.) I think the 7mm-08 or the .308 would do the job on deer just fine.

very first things i would do are: trigger job definately. also shim the forearm off the barrel with folded electrical tape, or using thin washers of some type. any means to keep the forearm from touching the barrel.
i would also buy a quality scope and mounts, if you can get hold of the extra money. my preference being burris signature(with inserts) dual dovetail rings and base. then either a burris 2x7, or 3x12 scope. the 2x7 will give a wider field of view for close up shots at game. the 3x12 is nice for target work, but still gives ample field of view. :D

From all the info i have gathered the burris or leupold scopes are the best.
which caliber though 7mm-08 or .308?

well, they would both be super. whichever you decide you want. i like my 7-08 just fine. i'd guess the 7-08 may be a little lighter in recoil. with the .308, 150's may be the bullet of choice for deer. in the 7-08, i use 120gr nosler bt's. 140's would also work. with lighter bullets, recoil should be less. either would work great.

around here, i can get a complete blued encore for $450 plus 6% tax. of course stainless would go for a few dollars more.
my setup is a stainless 15" 7-08 barrel on a blued encore action. it has a silver burris dual dovetail base, with siver burris signature rings. it has a blue burris 3x12x32 scope on top. kind of a two tone look, and i like it that way.
if you're shots may come at close range, take a serious look at a 2x7 burris. i think they have the widest field of view out there. 21' field of view @100, when on 2x. this is compared to the 3x12's 14' wide field of view @100, when on 3x. i'm not sure what the leupold has in that department, but i'm sure it would still be a top notch scope also. just expect to pay an additional $100-$150 over the burris.
good luck with your choice, and be sure to fill us in all about it.
hmmm? 7-08 or ,308? can't go wrong! either would work up to elk size game with appropriate bullets. :toast:

Brent,

If you like the challenge of bowhunting, you will probably like the challenge of handgun hunting. I have been shooting T/C ( and others ) for quite some time now and you are on the right track. You have received alot of good advice so far, and maybe this will help a little too.
The 7mm-08 and the .308 are both excellent chioces. I feel when it comes to taking a deer either caliber, it's six of one and a half dozen of the other. Yhe only thing I can add is, if you DO NOT, and are not planning to reload, the .308 ammo may be more readily available at more locations with a wider variety of bullets to choose from.
Out side of that, just practice as much as you can.

I do not plan on reloading.I just want a top quality tool to hunt with.thanks for all the info.
Is there much difference in recoil between the 7mm/08 and .308 in a handgun? Is there any difference in ammo prices?

Recoil wise they are about even according to the recoil calculators The 308 having a couple of ft/lbs more into your hand. I haven't shot the 7-08 but the 308 is not bad. If you are recoil sensitive you might be able to find a 308 Hunter barrel these were factory barrels with a brake. Makes the 308 into a pussycat.
You will have a much better selection of factory ammo in the 308. Plus you will be able to find 308 in most any store that carries ammo from the mom&pop to the large discount stores.
At Midsouth you have in 7-08

« Reply #18 on: November 20, 2003, 05:29:23 AM »
Brent, I shoot a 15" 308 Win Encore and just love it as for recoil I think mine is less than my 44 mag SRH. I have mine topped with a Leupold 2.5X8 scope and shoot my hand loads. I also carry a set of shoting sticks with me for a good rest. I have a regular rifle sling on mine and it carry's very nice. I don't know how much handgun you have shot but with practice a 200 yard shot is not out of the question in fact mine shoots 2" and under at 200 depending how well I do my part. But at 100 yards it is fairly easy to shoot under 1" groups.
Good Luck and Good Hunting & may God send you your dream buck this year. :D
