New way to make $$$, shoot more!!
« on: April 26, 2010, 12:55:56 PM »
Just bought a contender in 30-30 win a couple weeks ago. I think I made a deal on here today to buy a 22 barrel for it. I can get 20 shells for the 3030 for $17 or 550 for a 22 for $17. This breaks down to .85 versus .03 cents a shot. The barrel will pay for itself in 208 shots. After that every time I go shoot it will be like I am making money. Now if I can just get my wife to understand this. Do any of you practice a bunch with a 22 to save money?? It should help right??
Thanks,

I can't see how it would hurt.  I love my center fire calibers, but for some reason I get a real kick out of the 22lr.  So much so that I have three 22 barrels now.  I have a 14" scoped, a 10" octagon with open sights that I really love (I'm partial to the octagon barrels in light recoiling calibers), and a carbine barrel.  I can't quite put my finger on why the 22 is so much fun but it is.  Sure the money saving aspect is there, but that doesn't seem to explain it.

Bought a 17hmr, (not as cheap to shoot, but it aint bad either.) Love taking it to the range. Someone said a long time ago to take a 22lr to the range and shoot it after shoot an 06' or shotgun. I have tried this and you can bet the groups tighten right up. It's good practise.

The first barrel I purchased for my G2 was a 30-30, the very next barrel was a 22LR.  I handload, and cast my own bullets, so cost is not too much of an issue (about 6 cents or so to load 30-30's).  However, banging away with a 30-30 can get tiresome.  I shoot my 22LR barrel a LOT during the summer.  Lets me get in lots of trigger time.

My 22LR barrel is a 12" Custom Shop bull barrel, has a Nikon Monarch 2-8x scope.  Will thread a needle at 50 yards!

My main idea was to get a lot more trigger time before this fall and a 22 is probably the only way I can afford to do it. I have 4 kids and I am sure a couple of them will want to shoot it too. I guess I will have to start scouting around for a 223 in a couple months. Then I will need a way to carry it, still cyphering on that though.

I have a super 14 in 22LR and i shoot it quite a bit I also have 4 other barrels all center fire
it turns heads when you shoot from 100yds with a 22LR at the range. with bulk reminton ammo when i do
my part it will shoot 2-1/2" to 3" at 100 and around 1/2" at 50 this dosent happen all the time but i can
hold my own. it's cheap pratice and i know that ive converted some new TC shooters.

The 223 might not be a good one for the kids, they are a bit mouthy!

I went and sighted the 22 in yesterday. Propped up on my truck door it will shoot a ragged hole at 30 yards. I fired 10 shots after sighting in and you could only see where 4 bullets had cut the hole. If I put this on a solid rest there is no telling what it will do, especially if I let my 13 year old son shoot it. My 7 year old daughter says now it is not loud, won't kick and won't hurt her so now she can shoot it too. I love it when the kids get involved just not when they out shoot me. :o
