Does anybody elses...
« on: April 27, 2010, 10:46:57 AM »
My ears won't quit ringing.  Ive forgotten what "silence" sounds like.  Too many years of shooting before I learned about "ear protection" and working around one too many helicopter.

Do any of you use medication (or anything else for that matter) to get rid of the annoying sounds?  Ive seen a product advertised called "Quietus".  Anyone tried it?  I'm more likely to trust the answers I get  on Greybeard than info that shows up on a Google search.

Looking for relief in Idaho.

I'm glad you asked about this stuff. I was thinking about trying it myself. The ringing is driving me nuts. I've had it for 4yrs since I had a brain surgery. Hope some one can enlighten us.

Are you guys talking about Tinitus?  that ringing in your ears that either comes and goes or is always there?
They make white noise generators that look like hearing aids and help to get rid of it and now they ahve a new product called Quietus, some herb mix that stops the ringing.
The comercials for the stuff drives me crazy as they paly that loud rining to show what other people hear and it usually will trigger a ringing in my ears for an hour or two.  >:(

I've had it for years, and am just now getting intersted in doing something about it. I'm going to read about this Quietus stuff.

NO,you rascal. It was an exploratory surgery to see if I had one. It took about 12hrs of digging around in there but they found it. A former

I've had ringing in the ears for at least 20 years.  I've been told that Ginko Baloba will reduce it but I haven't noticed any difference.  Some days are worse than others.

I have it bad since I shot a Model 7 in 7mm-08 from a tree stand about 15 years ago.  I sold it a few weeks later.  I still have the ringing in my left ear though.

Same here left ear but a .454 Casull. I was taking a little nap on the hill side. I woke up and a deer was looking at me- 30'. I had my plugs out so I could hear one coming. Well I forgot to put them back in before I shot. That .454 is the loudest thing since the 175 SP I was gunner on in the service.

I found one "cure" for tinitus but I don't reccommend it. It is called an over-active immune system (mine) that attacks things like auditory nerves.  My hearing has been rapidly leaving me the last few years because of this, but so has the ringing that I have had in my ears for over 30 years.  Not all bad I suppose since most of what you hear these days isn't worth listening to anyway.  I wish all of you good luck in finding a solution to hearing troubles.

You  guys remember cap pistols?  We all tried them as kids.  I graduated, at the ripe age of 10, from one at a time, to a few at a time, to Dad's 16 oz. hammer and a whole roll at a time on the concrete curb.  What a BANG!  Many-many rolls over a year or two has given me a ringing in both ears that hasn't stopped in 45 YEARS.

If my blood pressure gets high, that especially loud ringing is a sure sign of impending internal meltdown and DANGER WILL ROBBINSON.

Hairtrigger,

I did that with my granddad's Damacus Twist double barrel when I was sixteen.  I didn't know what a Damacus Twist was until I partially disassembled one!  I guess you really should read & understand the warning labels on a box of ammo.

The strips of caps for the old cap pistols were even louder when hit with a hammer instead of using the gun

I have had it for over 40 years with 50% lose in one ear and 60% lose in the other.
I'm not sure I would know how to act if I wasn't being serenaded by the crickets 24-7.
To me that is exactly what it sounds like.
Being out side on a warm summer night.

It is my understanding (according to two ear specialist) that in my case it will never go away, but will gradually get worse as time goes by.
I have been told by several doctors that there is no cure for Tinitus.

The white noise generators only masks the Tinitus, it does not stop it.
In other words you hear the static noise instead of the ringing.
Not sure that is an improvement.

It is a lesson all that has it learned the hard way.

For those that only have a touch of it be very thankful.
For those like myself, I know what you are going through.
At least we are never alone, as long as we have our crickets!!!

I have had it so long, I have gotten used to it! if you can do that!

Some one take the Quiettis or whatever and let us know how it works.

I too have been listening to crickets for so long that I have forgotten how long. I had gotten used to them and didn't even notice them unless something caused me to think about them. But late last year they got tired of serenading me and left. Now I just have a slight sizzling noise that sounds like bacon frying off to my right rear. Not bad at all compared to the crickets. The downside is I'm having more trouble hearing what people are saying. Also I have about quit using my sound enhancing ear protection because they increase the sizzle sound to where it is very annoying.

Whatever that stuff is they are advertising for tinitus on TV is not approved by the FDA. The VA gives 10% disability for tinitus and there is no medical treatment for it.

About what I expected....there is a bunch of us listening to what Longtom calls "cricket serenade" wherever we go.  Doesn't surprise me a bit.

McWoodduck, do you have any first (or secondhand) knowledge of Quietus actually working?  I'm suspecting it is about like most everything that is advertised now days...a marketing strategy to get our money...but there is always hope.

I figure...in fact I'd almost bet, that at least one of the Graybeard gang has tried some Quietus.  We just need to find out who, and let them tell us first hand how it worked (or not).

This sounds promising, but the closest clinic is 200 miles from me. Also sounds like it is a long term treatment. Has some good information on the site about Tinnitus.

          Thanks, NGH

yup, i have it too.   doing live fires in the military when they wouldnt let you wear hearing protection.  let me tell ya, being next to a sheridan tank when it fires a missle will ring your ears, as will jumping into the jet blast of a c141 starlifter.

Just got done riding the lawn mower, and my tinitus is little louder now. Mine does that ,gets more noticeable after some exposure to noise.

One of the other SNCO's that was in my unit for the last 6 months was diagnosed and treated at Norfolk.  She said that the ringing was so bad that she would get migraines and be physically sick from it.  They gave her some high-end hearing aids that are programmable.  They also gave her the Nueromonics device.  Basically it plays music that hits the freq's that are "missing".  It trains your brain to quit making noise to replace the missing freq's.  At least that is the way she described it.  Anyway, she swears by it.  She only wears it about 2 hours a day now.  Usually at her desk or when out walking or jogging.  She says that she got at least a 50% reduction and doesn't have to sleep with a fan or noise generator to drown out the ringing.  I'm definitely going to push for it when I get to San Antonio later this summer.  Maybe I'll be able to hear again without the constant ringing.

Yep, If ya got the ringing probably might not be long before you have eye floaters to. Between the two, old folks can sit around and imagine they are out campimg somewhere listening to the crickets and watching the clouds float by.

Enjoy it while you can.

Unlike Highwayman I don't do well under water.  The neuromonics sounds good, but when I checked for clinics the result was "none within 200 miles".  Hey, I already knew that I live in the boonies.  I may give them a call to see where the closest clinic is located.
