Steel Case .308 ok in Savage EDGE bolt gun ?
« on: April 29, 2010, 08:47:50 AM »
Hello:

I just bought a 500 rd case of .308, russian brown bear steel case ammo for my semi auto Saiga .308.

I'm contemplating buying a Savage Bolt gun in .308 -

Can you guys weigh in on if it's ok to use this steel case ammo in it ?

Thanks,  E TM  ;)

Maybe I phrased the question incorrectly:

How many here who shoot a commercial / military caliber (like .308 / .223), in your Savage / Stevens bolt gun, have a preference of Brass or Steel Case, and why ?

Thanks,   E Texas Minuteman

"Steel Case .308 ok in Savage EDGE bolt gun ?"

A steel cased round should work fine in a Savage or Stevens bolt gun. However, they may not be very accurate and you definitely can NOT reload them.

As mentioned....they are unlikely to be accurate. If you just want to hear it go bang...save some money and buy fireworks.

If you want to shoot more on a budget then get a Lee reloading kit , The deluxe dies, a pound of Varget, along with some once fired brass and a box of bullets . It will get you started .

You will start shooting groups over time , while the other just makes holes . With that you never know what you or the gun could do.Steel and steel rubbing togather- something gotta wear !!!

Gentlemen:

Thanks for your take !

I will invest in brass case ammo very soon, or some once fired brass.

I suppose it won't hurt to try a limited amount of the steel case stuff as a base of accuracy test.

I actually have a Dillion RL 550 B setup a buddy traded to me, but am just in the process of setting it up.

One reason for buying the .308 Savage EDGE (and the Saiga .308) is I already have the dies for .308/ 30-06 for the Dillion press.

Many thanks,   E TX M

The wolf 150gr steel cased ammo groups just as well as 150gr rem core lokt in my stevens 200, the diffrence being it has less of a powder charge. So when woodchuck season starts I crank the scope up 8 clicks and start shooting woodchucks. When deer season gets near I crank the scope back down 8 clicks and go back the rem core lokts.

If reloading is in your future I would say, buy only boxer primed brass ammo, The Edge from all the reviews I have read is your best buy, around here in the basic rifle it sells for $259.99, the Camo stock or the  scope package deal will increase it a little . The only complaint is the trigger, And it is a little different set up than is on the Stevens 200, but if it is bad you can still have it lightened up by a good gunsmith, But it may come threw OK, I have two Savage Stevens, The one needed trigger work, the other is not bad.
