45-70 BFR
« on: April 29, 2010, 05:47:12 PM »
Just traded into a 45-70 BFR and I am shooting 405 grain cast bullets over 28 grains of 5744 ...is there anyone out there that would trade some reloading information?

I have one but since the Moderator freaks  when loading data is given out on this forum I won't list any.  My load uses SR 4759 with a 520 gr bullet.  Also H322 with the same bullet.  Have shot a little H4350 with the same bullet and am going to experiment more with H4350
I know,  I know,  it is too slow for the 45/70 but is gentle on a cast bullet so am going to try it anyway.
My loads with the SR 4759 and H322 are within 28000 psi according to the Lyman 49th reloading book.
Recoil isn't too bad with my loads either.
But I have done some good shooting with all three loads.
405 grain bullets should be good.  I have some but just like the 457125 Lyman and an old 525-460 NEI that I have since I think of those bullet when I think of the 45/70.
SR 4759 is a powder that I like in a Uberti 1874 Sharps and a Trapdoor level load with the 457125 is plenty accurate from it at 300 yards with peeps.

405 gr Lee Cast over 25.0 gr Blue Dot
Another nice powder is IMR 4198  start with 32 gr to 35 gr for Trapdoor level loads to less then 18,000 CUP
you can go up to 40.5 gr for mid level pressure not exceeding 28,000 CUP

RL-7 can be used from 33.0 gr to 41.0 gr
I've found that anytime you exceed 40 gr of fast to mid speed powders you will notice recoil ;)

I also have a BFR 45-70.  I load both 405gr and 300gr with 25gr. of old-time favorite Alliant 2400.  Since it doesn't take much to kill paper, I don't load heavy.

I like IMR 4198 and Re 7. I shoot mostly jacketed bullets, but a 405 gr cast and 38-41gr of Re 7 is a strong, fun load to shoot.

500gr bullets and Trail Boss are pretty fun as well.
