45 colt bullets
« on: November 19, 2003, 03:12:28 PM »
Where can i buy bullets of your design, allready cast? i,m looking for a heavy load for my contender carbine, in 45 colt. i used to load 300 gr hard cast bullets to around 1300 fps in a ruger bisley. i used it here in florida for deer and hog,s it worked great if i hit the target, sure put them down fast!but i,m not a great pistol shot and would only take short shots. i had a winchester trapper for a while. it was harder to hit with than the pistol(less accurate). i had to paperpatch 44 mag. bullets to get it to shoot under three inches at fifty yards! now i have a proper launchpad and want some good bullets, thank you for any help. i like to be diffrent, and think the 45-70 is over kill. under 150 yards, i dont think the hog,s will know the diffrence. do you.
          thank you sir.

There are several commercial casters who offer LBT bullet designs, though I'm not aware of any at present who I would recommend.

Keep in mind that my reason for not recommmending any at present is the poor quality of the one known commercial caster.  If there are any who hand cast LBT designs and will let me know who they are I'll recommend them.

If I were to recommend casters who I know supply poor quality, the user will not get a fair test of LBT performance.  This is not to knock commercial casters as a whole, but they work extremely hard for their small profit, and tend to sell pounds of lead rather than quality.

You state that you are not a great pistol shot. -- Most people would be amazed at how good they will become once they obtain an LBT mold and set their handgun up for it.  When bullets all fly to the same point relative to the sights, we quickly learn what we are doing wrong and correct it automatically, without tutoring.  If the gun buckshots a 2, 3 inch or larger pattern at 25 yards, who can tell if he has pulled his shot or the gun threw it wild.
I wasn't a good handgun shooter until I taught my guns to cut a ragged hole, then I quickly learned to hit a four inch target at 100 yards with a two hand hold, standing.  Not exactly every shot, be sure you understand, but close enough that no coyote or deer gets away.

I will echo what Veral has said about properly cast bullets from his moulds. A friend has cast up some for me in his original LBT moulds and sent to me for use in both of my RBs in .454 Casull and .480 Ruger. The smallest groups those two guns have fired have come from those bullets he sent me.

Veral just e-mailed me earlier today to let me know my two moulds from him are on the way as of today. I'm getting a .452" 280 grain WFN and a 200 grain FN .358" mould. Both four cavity. I have some bullets made in one of his original .358" 200 grain moulds that in my .357 Herrett average under an inch consistently and the barrel I'm using is one that the seller sold because it didn't shoot for him. And he cast the bullets I'm using. In fairness to him he doesn't have access to the powder I'm using as it is discontinued but I have a nice supply laid back.

Quality cast bullets start from the time the pot is plugged in to the time they are boxed. Miss something in the middle and you might as well throw them in the wheel weight bucket for later. There are few who actually cast HAND cast LBTs. the quality will show to those who dont. Looks a good time to start casting your own. Have a good one.

Yess, yes, yes, Jim and Bill.

Not to knock those who hand cast for commercial sale, but it's and awful hard way to make a living and they MUST go fast if the family eats.  If you find one who gives high quality, don't argue if his price is a bit high.  He earns every penny of it.
