For whitetail size game it would be my Weatherby Vanguard in 270 Win. For varmints it would be my Ruger 77 in 22-250. Followed close by my Savage 112F in 204 Ruger.

The one I'm most familiar with.
I don't think the cal is all that important. In center fire, mine would be 3006 in Winchester mod. 70.It feels good, and I can shoot it off hand well.Lots of other calibers, makes and models out there just as capable.

The gun isn't the factor in missing the target........It be the human ;D

I think you are right about that. I said the 270 because that is the one i have carried the most. I am most familiar with that one. Lots of others would be just as good or better.

You have asked several different questions.  My "go to gun" that never seems to miss, isn't my "most accurate gun".

Anyway, right now, for the "shot of a lifetime" at a big game animal, i'd grab my Krieghoff drilling chambered in 8x57jrs.

I have no idea what gun you should get, as i have no idea what you plan to use it for.

270 Win Model 70 Classic Featherweight everyday and twice on sunday.

For a non-game hunting rifle (i.e. PEOPLE) I would use my 30 round clipped M4 clone AR-15 with
.223 recent loads with v-max bullets...
...which is as good as I can get.

I have a rem 700 in 22-250 that will put factory ammo under an inch and reloads at half that all day, BUT I believe my go to gun the last couple years is an Encore in 25-06. It makes me slow down and put them where they need to be a lot better knowing I just have one shot at it.
Thanks,

I just wish I had it back.  It was a 700 Classic made in the late 1970s.  It was a 30-06.  I shot the barrel out I think.  One day I couldn't get it to group any more, so it went to the gunsmith and returned a few months later as a blueprinted 280AI with a Shilen match grade barrel.

I've got a 700 LVSF in 7-08 that is mighty fine whitetail medicine as is my Model 7 in 308.

The most accurate rifle I own is a Remington Model 700 BDL 222, but I don't carry it a lot with it's >12lbs weight. The gun I go to the most is a tie between three:

Winchester 9422M 22 mag
Browning BAR Safari II 30-06
Remington 870 Express Mag 20

Depends on what I am headed out the door against. It will shortly be a Marlin 1894C 357 mag to complement my sidearm, but for now it is the 9422M that gets the call most due to it matches my single six 22 mag.

The 30-06 is very accurate for an auto and I shoot it well off hand, but 30-06 is a bit much for most things I shoot at random.

The 870 is in there because if it is turkey season it is in my truck instead of my 9422M.

I would reccomend a Model 700 308 for what you say you want. Less recoil than the '06 and flat shooting for longer ranging, but it still lays the smackdown with authority.

Ruger M77 Target in 223 that is fond of placing 53gr SMK 50gr Dog Town and 55gr V Max hand loads in the .2-.3 (total size of the ragged holes) group size @ 100 yards.

The Weatherby Van in 308 has recently shown what it likes with a hand load that is going .4  @ 100 with 3 shots.

The Marlin 444S isnt far behind them considering I have gotten it to repeat the MOA @ 100 using the 300gr XTP and have taken game this last season that was solely determend on the rifles consistent accuracy.

Any one of those would do darn near anyhting I could want of them in my region of the country, wether two legged or four.

Believe it or not it is my Marlin 1895 in 45/70 with 300 gr. HPs over trapdoor load of Varget.  Every year I plan to take something else deer hunting and invariably end up with the 1895 after sessions at the rage.

That would be the Tikka t3 in 300 winny. It will honestly stay under 1 minute with 180gr Rem Corelocs.

I have a Ruger .270 Winchester. I got it back in the 70's when I turned 14...it has been through so much with me over the years.

I spent a lot of time shooting that rifle and I have a great little load for it. From a rest this little darling will put 5 shots into a quarter at 200 yards...its my "go to" gun whenever I shoot modern rifle...  8)

That would be my model 88 Winny in .308 with a 2 1/2 power Weaver scope.  Groups open up a tad when I take the scope off and use the Williams Foolproof peep with a Sourdough Patridge front sight combo.  Rifle is first year they were made, 1955.

I've lived out here on the ranch since the early 60's.   The gun I usually GRAB as of late is my SxS Fox 20ga for that one shot opportunity on an unwelcome predator in the middle of the night.   For broad daylite long distance shooting I used my son's Remington 700 .270 once at a howling coyote from the back steps 325 paces out in the pasture DRT.  Very accurate rifle.
