Charged or cut?

I hunted on the Renegade Ranch in Michigan this last September, the hogs were plenty wild.  We got false charged by the sow group. The teenagers were always just out of (spear) range.  And the boar group was like the mist.  Nope, no injuries in three days, and we could touched 'em a time or two. :D

Hoggin'

A buddy and I were hunting with dogs once.  The dogs bayed up a hog in a small under-cut on trail along a rock face.  We were close to the top of the hill, the bottom was a LONG way, straight  down.  I did a quick calculation and figured the trail wasn't wide enough for me and a hog if he decided to run.  I had just crawled up the rocks when Mr. Hog decided the dogs were bothering him too much.  My partner was still on the trail.  Fortunately for him, someone had build a fence at the edge years ago.  When the hog came by, he jumped back, supported by the fence and unloaded a round from his 44 just as the hog ripped his pants open.  Hog was shot, leg was bruised and we still talk about it.  Hog didn't intentionally go after him, he just happened to be standing in the only way out of a ad situation for the hog.

Aw Jeez!

Canada afew years back.  They made it hell to get guns in so I did the crossbow gig.  I tolt this story before

Anyways, X13 pigs, my 1st encounter with them.  We chase the sons a biches around the compound until it bordered on foolish.  The rooters knew we wanted to stick em and the y wouldn't let us get close enough for a shot.

Well, the Ole Coug here didn't just fall off no turnip truck.  I noticed they kept commin out in the corner of the upper glade.  So I went an set back in the goldenrods an hid jest off the bunny trail.  I'll be boiled in linseed oil if not 5 minutes later I hear the oink gruntin I been dreamin about an here they come.

They marched out in single file and I swung up ahead of the biggest one an let fly.  Now keep in mind this is a 150 pound crossbow with a red dot sight that I've been drivin quarters with practicin.

The bolt flew and I watched it....sheeet man......led em to much!  Watchin....wait a minute.....by the time it gets to the pig, it hits em square in the ass!

Said rooter continues for about 40 yards and goes down. Huh?  So I toodle on over and there is a bloodbath like you had to see to believ. Severed the femoral artey.  The pig is down, but he's heavin, not dead.  I hate that.  Gotta finish it here an now.

So I pult my bowie out to do the deed.  As I lean over to stick em he's on his feet like there ain't nothin wrong with him!  I'm out in the open, there ain't a tree for 500 yards in any direction, and here come the pig!

Cool breeze here formulates a plan. Just as he's gonna hit I figger on spreadin my legs lettin em go through an then I'm gonna run like Hell the other way.  You see, I know pigs can't turn on a dime, necks too short

It was a good plan considerin, cept the dang pig was wider through the shoulders than I could spread my legs.  The snout went through awrite, but them shoulders took the feet right out from under me!  Now I'm goin backwards tryin to put the brakes on this fool pig while he's buckin like a brahma bull right in my chest!

I got me a hanfull of hog hair in the one hand hangin on fer dear life and stabbin to beat hell with the bowie in the other. I musta stabbed that son of a whore....Hell, I lost count, but it was a bunch a stickin.  Some 50 yards or so later he's plum outa blood and goes down stone dead.

Me I'm layin on top of em figgerin I ain't got a rib left ain't broke.  Then I hears this Gawd awful laughin an I look up to see the guides standin there with tears runnin down their frog faces.  They said they ain't never seen nuthin like that an prly won't ever agin.

I lit em up, tolt em I coulda been kilt.  Where in hell was my backup???  Made no nevermind, they was laughins  so hard they a liked ta peed their pants, couldn't a shot anyways.

I keeps a tellin ya'll, these danged hogs are KILLERS!

About 25 years ago a club turned loose about 25 russian boars and 50 head of domestic hogs along the ruver.10 years later they were so thick it was plum easy to kill hogs was'nt screered of nuthin. They would go out into the farmers feilds and wreck everything..    ..    .My uncle a farmer invited me over one morning to some property they rented for growing peanuts.I met him there before day lite and could hear the hogs in the field. We walked down the fence row a ways and waited. He went abot 70 yds farther than me....                     ...  .When it got just enough light i could see the hogs were walking by me before they got to far i opened up killing three and puting another down but not dead. The rest were in high gear.I looked up to see my uncle floping around and hogs running all over him.I could'nt help but laugh. He was mad and said them hogs attacked him.I then pointed out he had been standing in front of a hole in the fence and this was were they had been coming and going.I assured him they never new he was there....   .   .. We went back to the dead hogs and the one that was still alive but not gettng up.I told him i would go get the truck if hog is'nt dead by then i'd give him another round from the carbine. When i got back i find the hog 30 yards from were i had left him  and my uncle bleeding and cut real bad.It seems he decided to try and cut the hogs throat. On the way to the hospitol he told me i could have all the hog hunting i wanted but he wasnt going any more.this story always gets told on him at family get togethers and he has the scares to prove it.
Without Plumbers there would be alot more crap in the world

I shot a 75 to 100 lb boar about 100 yards away with a .30-06 and 165 Barnes X.  The boar dropped and stayed there for a while.  When I went closer to examine him, he got up and charged me!   I was about 20 yards away and ran to a mesquite tree (I was hunting in Texas).  The "Y" of the tree was about 3 feet off of the ground.  I ran and jumped on the Y which was high enough for the boar to not do anything to me (HOGS CAN'T JUMP).  He was hanging around for a minute or two, then got dizzy from the bullet shot, and finally dropped down on his side.  I didn't take any chances so I stayed in the tree for another 10  or 15 minutes - and threw some sticks at him to see if he would move.

Now I carry either a .454 Casull or .480 Ruger with me.

Tell you what I found out about hogs jumping... and I would NEVER have believed this if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. The boar on my webpage (picture below) had run me and a guide, and five dogs all over the place (Telico Junction Hunting Preserve) for a full 3 1/2 hours. My guide had me stop by the side of a small stream, which I would guess was about 10 feet from bank to bank, or a bit more. He knew from experience where the hog was and where it would run past us and had me set up for the shot. As the boar came running, it absolutely vaulted across that stream!!! When it hit the opposite bank, it nearly came to a stop, and that is when I got the first of the two shots it took to anchor him. The dogs on the other hand ran down the bank, through the water, and up the other bank, which put enough distance between them and the boar to make the shot easier... I would have expected to see a deer do this, but was absolutely astounded to see this big boar do it... Here is the picture...

The pig jumped a stream 10 feet wide?   That's not jumping...that's flying.  Okay, Okay Iron Knees, I believe you.   :)

I guess people should now never use the phrase "When Pigs Fly." :-D

When Pigs Fly?
« Reply #10 on: December 30, 2002, 08:10:53 PM »
Pigs CAN jump.  Fly, I think not!  Stand on their hind legs; sure can!

Seems a valley pig farmer I knew had a novel way to increase the size of the hams.  He placed his feed trough high enough that the hogs had to stand on their hind legs to eat.  His hogs sure had the most beautiful hams in the valley!
I am, therefore, I think.
