It's also going to be available in the Handi-grip version.

Handi-grip is an ambidextrous thumbhole stock similar to the Remington SureShot which its designed after.

Boy I sure hope those Handi grips shoot good cause they sure are ugly.

Butt Ugly, and clumsy looking as all get out. I can not imagine having such a contraption on any single shot rifle.
The typical Thumb-Hole is ugly enough, but this went far beyond that.

However, in all fairness, that is just one person's opinion and this thing just may sell like hot cakes.
There are those out there who probably like, and even want, futuristic styling in their guns.

I got to handle a 223 with the Handi Grip stocks the other day.  To me, it felt worse than it looked, which is saying something.  Cause it is UGLY!

Dinny    I got mine back last week.. (new bbl).  I had posted earlier that it had been there over nine months. I had asked for a trigger job, but they didn't touch it. Mine shot all of the Rem. ammo with only two misfires out of 10 rounds. It would not fire with my reloads. No, the shoulder was not set back on these rounds. I have another 35 W that I built on a Savage 110 action, and all of my reloads fire in it with no problem. Rem. sent me a return shipping so I'll get it off in the mail today. Hope to get it ironed out. I'm certain that they will make it do it's job.

Well, I just went and picked up my Whelen that I order from bud's last week. Everything seems good, it does have a tight lock up, takes a little effort to get it to break open, but it's tight, I guess they are changing recoils pads, cause on my old older handi's it came with the vent pad, this one has the solid pad like a limbsaver; Trigger from the factory has a avg of 4.5 lbs using my RCBS trigger scale. Gonna give it a good cleaning and get some loads built. Hope to get to the range this week.

Here's some pics

I like it! I like it a lot!
The .35 Whelen has long been a favorite cartridge of mine. I don't have it in a Handi, yet, but I do have it in a semi-custom built....1500 Howa Action, 28" Douglas Supreme Barrel,  Canjar Trigger, and a fairly nice piece of Clairo Walnut.
I currently have two Handi Rifles, .280 Remington and a 45-70, and an "extra" barrel in 30-30 that will interchange with the 45-70...pop one off, pop the other on.

I plan on the Whelen being my next addition but I want the complete rifle.

I can't tell from the pictures, but that barrel appears to be about 26"...Is that right?

(I am fortunate enough to own a Lyman 358009 Bullet Mold, for the Whelen and with hard cast bullets at about 2250fps, this particular round is a delight to shoot and is, without a doubt, truly the "po-boy's .375 H&H".)

Congratulations! You have what I consider the ultimate Single Shot Rifle.

Russ,

New production 35 Whelens are 22", available in wood or synthetic stock, we tried to get them to offer it in 26", but to no avail, there have been two polls on the Whelen, one to get it reintroduced and the other on what barrel length was wanted.  ;)

Thanks, Tim
I was not aware of that.

Personally, I suspect the powers to be knows what best, or what will sell best, but in the Handi I have always been a bit partial to the longer barrels....in fact, with that picture he posted of the rifle leaning against the wall, my heart actually quicken a bit because I just knew he had one in 26".

My local oldtimer fun shop owner explained the Whelen to me. In olden times, a magnum action would cost a month's pay, but 06 actions were a dime a dozen. That said, I saw 3 Remington 750 Whelens in 3 different stores this weekend. And factory ammo. The round has some life in it.

Russ, Tim's right; it has a 22in barrel. I just love the new recoil pad, I know it's not a limbsaver, but it feels close not like those wimpy factory pads that came on them before.

I suspect the new recoil pad is similar to the pad on the new checkered synthetic stocks, both the monte carlo and Handi-grip.

Here's the barrel length poll and the original poll on the Whelen "re-reintroduction", the good news is they offered the Whelen again, the disappointment was they made it a 22" again instead of the 26" the majority wanted.

Thanks for posting those links, Tim
Not sure what I was doing when that poll took place, but obviously I missed it.

Seems there was an overwhelming number wanting the 26" barrel, while the other options were somewhat similar percentage wise.
I read some pretty good reasoning for having barrels less than 26", along with some great reasons for wanting the 26".

Anyway, we got what we got for now.
Maybe, just maybe, the option for a 26" barrel may still come along, and having two barrels for a single system is not the worst thing in the world.

Thanks again for staying on top of this.

I picked up my new Whelen today.  I ordered it yesterday, expecting Monday delivery.  The guy called at 12:00 and said it was just delivered.  It is the synthetic stock, feels much better than the old style synthetics.  Now to break out the go gauges and see what kind of headspace she has.  Then get a load working.  I hope it will stabilize the 358009, cause I already have a few hundred of those that I cast up for the last disaster of a Handi rifle I tried.

From the for what it is worth department.  She closes up tight on a go gauge, won't latch on a field gauge.  Should be OK if the ammo is correct.  I am a happy camper.

As of today, Ellett Brothers had them in stock.  They are a distributor that supplies most of the gun shops here in NC.  Mine set me back $270 out the door for a new in box rifle with the synthetic stock set.  It looks just like the one in Tim's post above.
