US says it has 5,113 nuclear warheads

WASHINGTON – The United States has 5,113 nuclear warheads in its stockpile and "several thousand" more retired warheads awaiting the junkpile, the Pentagon said Monday in an unprecedented accounting of a secretive arsenal born in the Cold War and now shrinking rapidly.

The Obama administration disclosed the size of its atomic stockpile going back to 1962 as part of a campaign to get other nuclear nations to be more forthcoming, and to improve its bargaining position against the prospect of a nuclear Iran.

"We think it is in our national security interest to be as transparent as we can be about the nuclear program of the United States," Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told reporters at the United Nations, where she addressed a conference on containing the spread of atomic weapons.

Still appears to be enough to do the job! If I recall at the height of the cold war we had around 30,000. If you all recall Reagan proposed the 5,000 limit in the SALT treaty. Just hope we keep good track of them.

First of all, I don't care who said what, but the actual number of weapons we have and what type should always be top secret.  What possible benefit would it be for us to have our potential enemies know what we have.  Who knows how an enemy with that knowledge could use it in planning a strategy against us?  All we can hope is that any such present, or future enemy will realize that Hillary is a known liar and so is her boss.  Whose side are these dolts on for crying out loud?  Never mind--I know their allegiance is not to the United States of America.
